Ebola risk ‘very high’ in eastern DR Congo as UN intensifies response.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially raised the national risk assessment for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to "very high."

This upgrade comes as a rapidly expanding Ebola outbreak continues to climb, with nearly 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected deaths now under investigation.

While the global risk is still classified as low, the United Nations and regional health bodies are aggressively scaling up their emergency operations to prevent a massive Central African health crisis.

MSF says it recorded 138 airstrikes in 2025 and 12 attacks on health facilities in South Sudan.

Médecins Sans Frontières/MSF South Sudan says South Sudan is going through one of the most serious humanitarian crises in history and that the medical charity recorded 138 airstrikes in 2025, compared to only 2 in 2024, and 12 attacks on MSF medical teams and facilities.

Nearly 762,000 people lost access to healthcare due to attacks on medical facilities between January 2025 and April 2026, according to the medical charity.

6,095 patients have had to be treated following conflict-related violence.

Women and girls are massively affected by sexual violence, and forced displacement is counted in the hundreds of thousands, MSF said.

A strong memory and moment of joy occurred when South Sudan's President Salva Kiir spotted his longtime liberation comrade, Major General William Deng Garang, during the 43rd celebration of SPLA/SPLM day on May 16, 2026, in Juba.

Ebola treatment center torched in DRC, medical officials and patients fled the scene.

Protesters set fire to an Ebola treatment centre at Rwampara General Hospital in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) after being blocked from retrieving the body of a suspected Ebola victim on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

Local youth and family members clashed with medical staff to forcibly take the body of a well-known local man for a traditional funeral.

Protesters broke into the facility, torched equipment, and set fire to objects inside—including at least one body being stored there.

During the chaos, six patients escaped the facility, including three confirmed Ebola cases and three suspected cases.

Security forces fired warning shots to disperse the crowd.

Aid workers from ALIMA temporarily fled but have since returned to resume work under military protection.

Health authorities in Uganda's Arua District, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), confirmed that Arua city is currently safe from the Ebola virus that has caused a regional emergency.

Authorities say suspects with travel histories to hotspots in the DRC have all been tested with negative results, although one other is currently under strict quarantine, waiting for test results.

As health officials strengthen precautionary measures, residents are being urged to remain vigilant, avoid illegal border routes, wash hands regularly, and report symptoms.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit has endorsed a new policy, establishing an escrow account for oil revenues to accelerate road construction across South Sudan.

The proposal was presented by the Minister of Roads and Bridges, Peter Lam Both, on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

In a meeting with President Salva Kiir Mayardit, Lam said it's a measure designed to improve transparency and attract international construction firms to competitively bid for road projects nationwide.

Major prioritized roads are the Juba–Bahr el Ghazal Highway, the Nadapal–Boma–Raad–Ethiopia Highway (expected to be funded by the African Development Bank), and the Juba–Torit–Nadapal Highway (currently under World Bank consideration).

Clashes continued on Wednesday, May 20, in Masisi territory, in North Kivu, where the AFC-M23 rebels and the Wazalendo coalition, allied with the FARDC, have been opposing each other for three days.

The areas most affected by this fighting are the sectors of Katoyi and Osso-Banyungu, in the south of the territory, as well as the Nyamaboko 1st group, particularly the localities of Kazinga and Luke, where detonations of heavy and light weapons were heard on Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday, in the neighboring area of Katoyi, the Wazalendo coalition and the FARDC reportedly regained control of several villages previously occupied by the rebels: Muhahirwa, Ngululu, Nkokwe, Kasheke, Mitimingi, Katoyi-centre, and their surroundings.

While the toll of the clashes remains unknown, the use of heavy weapons is causing widespread panic. Many inhabitants have fled their villages to take refuge in the bush.

Local sources fear an intensification of violence in this area, already weakened by several months of armed conflict, despite calls for a ceasefire launched as part of the Doha and Washington processes.
