Akol Ayii Madut pledges to fence Kuajok Freedom Square

Former Director of South Sudan Customs Services, Dr. Akol Ayii Madut, has pledged to build a modern fence around Kuajok Freedom Square.

Dr. Akol made the announcement during the welcoming ceremony of the new Warrap State Governor, Amb. Bol Wek Agoth, held at the square on Tuesday.

He also offered the use of the hall in his Ayiidit Tower in Kuajok for official government meetings and conferences.

Kuajok Freedom Square, which hosts sports events, concerts, and public rallies, has long been fenced with traditional gana materials, leaving it in poor condition.

Majok Ayar elected as President of the newly formed BCPT

Majok Ayar Chieny has been elected as the new President of the Bahr El Ghazal Counties’ Peace Tournament (BCPT), a tournament recently formed by delegates from 23 counties of the Bahr El Ghazal region.

In election held at South Sudan Hotel - Buluk, delegates’ assembly comprising representatives from all participating counties, cast their votes, Majok Ayar has 32 votes and Dut Lual Anei with 5 votes.

His election marks a new chapter in regional sports and unity, following a split from the Bahr El Ghazal Counties’ League (BCL), which had previously been divided into two rival factions led by Madut Anei Kuendit and Peter Mawow.

Due to internal conflicts, the county leaders and delegates decided to abandon the BCL and establish the BCPT to ensure the continuity of the third edition of the annual tournament. The rebranded BCPT aims to restore unity and transparency in the region’s football affairs.

As the newly elected President, Majok Ayar will serve two terms and spearhead the drafting of a new constitution for the BCPT. The constitution will enshrine the tournament as a people-led initiative, abolishing appointment-based leadership and establishing direct elections as the only method for choosing future leaders.

The BCPT is now seen as a unifying force for peace and youth empowerment in the Bahr El Ghazal region.

South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) Launches Door-to-Door Taxpayer Registration in Juba City with New Zoning Strategy.

Juba, South Sudan – The South Sudan Revenue Authority (SSRA) today announced the launch of a comprehensive taxpayer registration initiative in Juba City, aimed at expanding the tax base and enhancing tax compliance through a door-to-door registration process. The campaign targets all businesses, service providers, and self-employed individuals operating within the city.

Hon. Simon Akuei Deng, Commissioner General of the SSRA, revealed that Juba City has been strategically divided into ten zones to facilitate efficient registration and improve monitoring of tax compliance. This zoning approach is designed to create a comprehensive and updated database of taxpayers, enabling the SSRA to identify and register all eligible taxpayers, gather accurate data for strategic decision-making, and strengthen service delivery and future tax administration planning.

Commissioner General Simon Akuei emphasized the importance of this initiative in supporting the government’s revenue mobilization efforts, which are critical for funding public services and meeting fiscal obligations under the recently enacted Finance Bill 2024-2025.

In a stern warning, the Commissioner General cautioned against any unauthorized collection of fees or impersonation of SSRA officials during the registration process. He affirmed that such illegal activities will be reported to relevant authorities and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The SSRA continues to encourage taxpayers to also utilize the electronic tax (eTax) portal for registration and other tax services, complementing the door-to-door campaign with digital solutions to improve accessibility and efficiency.

For more information or assistance, taxpayers in Juba City are urged to contact SSRA directly through official channels.

Vice President Calls for Urgent Action on Peace Deal

Today, Vice President Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel met with Hon. Kuol Manyang Juuk, the Chairperson of the National Transitional Committee (NTC), to discuss speeding up the full implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement. Hon. Kuol Manyang shared updates on the committee’s efforts to bring all signatory parties together, especially after recent changes in political leadership. Their goal is to push forward key issues like reforms, unity, and the full merging of armed forces under President Salva Kiir.

The Vice President praised the work of the NTC but stressed that the people of South Sudan have waited too long for peace. He made it clear that peace must be delivered now — not tomorrow. “Without peace, there is no development, no future, and no country,” he said. His message was a strong call for leaders to act fast and fulfill their promise to the nation.

Public Advisory Statement on Internal Cohesion Within the SPLM-IO and Its Impact on the Revitalized Peace Process

Date: 1st July 2025
Issued by: Peace Implementation Oversight Body (e.g., Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission – RJMEC)
Location: Juba, Republic of South Sudan

The peace implementation oversight body responsible for monitoring compliance with the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) has issued a formal appeal to the leadership of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-In-Opposition (SPLM-IO) amid rising concerns over increasing internal discord.

Reports from peace monitors, independent observers, and civil society networks indicate that growing divisions and power struggles within the SPLM-IO—ranging from disputed appointments, parallel declarations, and alleged breakdown in party communication—are undermining the movement’s capacity to operate as a unified actor within the peace implementation framework.

> “The persistence of unresolved internal disagreements within a principal signatory party risks weakening the integrity and momentum of the peace implementation process,” the peace-monitoring body stated. “This is particularly alarming as South Sudan enters a critical phase of the transitional roadmap, including the preparation for national elections, the reconstitution of the national legislature, and the implementation of transitional justice mechanisms.”

The oversight body has reiterated its position that all political formations participating in the transitional process must exhibit internal discipline, consultative governance, and consistency in representation. The current fragmentation within the SPLM-IO, if left unchecked, could impede the smooth functioning of several key transitional bodies, including:

The Joint Transitional Security Committee (JTSC)

The National Constitutional Amendment Committee (NCAC)

The Political Parties Council (PPC)

Electoral institutions under formation

The peace-monitoring authority has recommended the following:

1. Urgent convening of a high-level internal dialogue conference within the SPLM-IO, with participation from grassroots representatives, women’s leagues, youth structures, and regional party chapters, to chart a path toward reconciliation and organizational harmony.

2. Activation of the movement’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms, including disciplinary committees and conflict mediation panels, in line with the SPLM-IO’s constitution and code of conduct.

3. Refraining from public counter-statements or unilateral decisions by SPLM-IO factions, which may escalate tensions and compromise the party’s image within the peace process.

4. Engagement of IGAD, AU, and international guarantors, especially Troika members (Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States), to offer diplomatic support, advisory mediation, and technical assistance in restoring unity within the party.

5. Assurance of continuity in participation by SPLM-IO-designated officials in all R-ARCSS institutions, regardless of internal disagreements, until the party resolves its leadership disputes through legitimate means.

The monitoring authority stressed that internal divisions within any signatory stakeholder not only delay institutional progress but also weaken public trust in the peace process. For communities affected by years of war, this disunity threatens the already fragile social fabric and delays the delivery of long-promised reforms.

> “At this delicate stage in the peace journey, where national elections are on the horizon and critical reforms remain unfinished, political cohesion is no longer optional—it is foundational,” the statement emphasized.

The oversight body further encouraged the leadership of SPLM-IO to reaffirm its political will to remain a credible and responsible actor in the national transition. Restoring internal unity and demonstrating collective responsibility is crucial to sustaining the legitimacy of the peace process and fulfilling the aspirations of the South Sudanese people.

The peace-monitoring body reaffirms its readiness to provide technical and diplomatic support to facilitate intra-party reconciliation and to continue working with all signatory parties toward the full and inclusive implementation of the Revitalized Agreement.

Public Statement on the Launch of Disarmament in Mayom County, Unity State

Date: 1st July 2025
Location: Mayom County, Unity State, Republic of South Sudan

The County Government of Mayom, in collaboration with the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), officially announces the commencement of a comprehensive disarmament operation across all payams of Mayom County. This initiative follows the national directive from the SSPDF General Headquarters in Juba, issued in response to the deteriorating security conditions in parts of Unity and Warrap States.

This disarmament campaign is part of a wider national effort to reduce armed intercommunal violence, with a particular focus on eliminating illegal fi****ms in the hands of civilians, especially armed youth groups. The operation is being carried out under the framework of the six-month State of Emergency declared by His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit, following increased cattle raiding and revenge-related killings across several communities.

The disarmament process began last Friday in Mayom County headquarters and Mankien Payam, and will gradually expand to all eleven payams within the county. The initiative prioritizes peaceful engagement with the local population, and aims to achieve voluntary surrender of arms. However, authorities have been authorized to take enforcement action where necessary to ensure compliance.

> “This is a peaceful operation,” stated Hon. James Lily Kuol, Commissioner of Mayom County. “But where resistance occurs, the security forces will respond accordingly. No payam will be excluded from this operation.”

The disarmament is currently being implemented by forces under SSPDF Division 4 based in Unity State, while additional specialized units are expected to reinforce the operation in the coming days.

Traditional leaders, such as Paramount Chief Puok Tuil, have expressed strong support for the campaign, emphasizing the potential for a reduction in cycles of revenge attacks and localized insecurity.

> “We have seen no violence since the operation began in Mayom town and Mankien,” said Chief Tuil. “We believe disarmament is necessary for peace to prevail.”

Youth representatives have also voiced cautious support. Michael Tuach Magot, speaking on behalf of youth in the area, urged the SSPDF to maintain community dialogue and partnership.

> “These weapons are destroying us through cattle raids,” he said. “We call upon the government to involve youth leaders at every stage to ensure the process remains peaceful.”

This statement also acknowledges the recent findings reported by the United Nations indicating significant loss of life due to intercommunal violence, including over 200 deaths in March and 80 more in recent weeks. These developments underscore the urgency of a coordinated and inclusive approach to disarmament and civilian protection.

The County Government of Mayom reaffirms its commitment to supporting national peace efforts and ensuring security, stability, and development for all its citizens. The success of this disarmament process depends on collaboration between the security forces, local leaders, civil society, and the youth of Mayom County.

We call upon all community members to cooperate fully and responsibly as we collectively work toward a peaceful and disarmed society.

Signed,
Office of the Commissioner

Tragedy in Tonj North: Evangelist Killed, Pastor Injured in Armed Ambush

Tonj North, Warrap State – A wave of sorrow has swept through the Seventh-day Adventist Church community in Warrap State after an evangelist was shot and killed in a violent ambush on Sunday evening. A pastor who was with him survived the attack but remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

The two clergymen had just concluded a day of ministry in the villages of Tonj North County when unknown gunmen opened fire on them. According to a local church leader, the evangelist died instantly, while the pastor was rushed to a nearby facility for emergency care.

“We lost a humble servant of God — a man who spent his life spreading peace, hope, and the word of Christ. It’s heartbreaking,” the pastor said, his voice trembling.

The attack has sent shockwaves through the religious community in Warrap and beyond, with many struggling to understand why men of God — whose only mission was to serve — would be met with such violence.

While the names of the victims have not been officially released, church members are mourning deeply. Across congregations, prayers are being held and candles lit for the fallen evangelist.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in South Sudan has declared a mourning period and called for nationwide prayers for peace and protection.

“This act of cruelty has left a scar on our hearts,” one local church elder said. “But even in our tears, we believe God is near the brokenhearted.”

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and local authorities have yet to make any arrests. The motive remains unclear.

Tonj North, like many rural parts of South Sudan, continues to struggle with insecurity and armed violence, often tied to local conflicts and weak law enforcement. However, the targeted killing of religious workers is rare — and deeply unsettling.

Community leaders and faith organizations are urging the government to step in.

“How long will violence roam unchecked?” asked a representative from the South Sudan Council of Churches. “If evangelists can be murdered on their way home from preaching peace, then we are all in danger.”

For now, a family grieves. A church mourns. And a nation is once again reminded of the painful fragility of life — even for those who walk with Bibles, not weapons.
