Japan and WFP Sign US$2.2 Million Deal for Nutrition Assistance in South Sudan

Juba, 26 August 2026 — The Government of Japan and the World Food Programme (WFP) have signed a US$2.2 million (JPY 350 million) agreement to support lifesaving nutrition assistance for vulnerable women and children across South Sudan.

The agreement was signed in Juba by Japan’s Chargé d’Affaires ad interim, Mr. Hiromoto Oyama, and WFP Representative and Country Director in South Sudan, Ms. Mutinta Chimuka.
The support comes as more than half of South Sudan’s population faces acute food insecurity, while funding shortages continue to threaten essential nutrition services.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Oyama reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting the people of South Sudan, emphasizing a human-security approach focused on protecting lives, dignity and the future of individuals.

Japan said it will continue working with WFP and other partners to strengthen support for vulnerable communities and contribute to a more secure and resilient future for South Sudan.
