THE STREET KID - EPISODE 1
Subtitle: The Useless Boy
On a mild day, Mrs. Mkhwanazi - nee Motsa (Thoko) is shouting to her 7-year-old daughter, Lungile, after giving her some severe strokes and palm claps. She was missing for two hours, and her mother was frantic with worry. Lungile had sneaked out with some breakfast to enjoy with her street friend, Zweli. "It's about an hour we look for you and you are busy with this useless and homeless boy" some of the words she shouted.
Despite her mother's punishment, Lungile felt more comfortable when she was with Zweli. She missed him and wanted to be with him. After her mother's scolding, Lungile snuck out again to find Zweli, but he was nowhere to be found.
Lungile's small feet pattered against the pavement as she ran through the familiar streets, her eyes scanning the crowded market for a glimpse of Zweli's familiar figure. She had snuck out of the house again because being with Zweli made her feel seen and loved in a way she didn't experience at home.
As she turned a corner, her heart sank. Zweli was nowhere to be found. The usual spot where they met was empty, and the vendor who sometimes gave them scraps of food shook his head when Lungile asked if he had seen Zweli.
Meanwhile, back at home, Thoko's frustration with Lungile's behavior had reached a boiling point. She stormed into the study where her husband, Jabulane, was working, and poured out her concerns about their daughter's association with the street boy. Jabulane's expression darkened as he listened to Thoko's account, and by the time she finished, he was seething with anger.
Thoko knew she was in trouble as Jabulane slammed his fist on the desk, making her jump. "This is unacceptable, Thoko! Our daughter is running wild, and you're just standing there, letting her do whatever she wants!" he thundered. Thoko felt like she was in a hot boiling mushroom soup, as Jabulane's anger was palpable and she knew she would bear the brunt of his frustration.
Cliffhanger: But when Lungile finally returned home, she was a shadow of her former self...
