I STARTED SENDING MY LASTIE ON SMALL ERRANDS LATELY.
But something happened recently that questioned my parenting skills (one I have never claimed to have).
I asked him to go buy some pastries that he personally loves so much for a quick breakfast, only for him to return with bread.
I was like, "What's this?"
Without hearing what he had to say (oh, he always has something to say), I sent him back.
Knowing who he was, I knew he would be hanging around, and that annoyed me.
Boiling with anger, I took the bread from him and returned it to the lady, who, upon seeing me return, started her own bickering.
My boiling point was over the thermometer because I really hate attention-seeking talks.
I returned home with the bread as the lady refused to take it, claiming that it was what my son specifically requested.
Now I am red hot!
Why would he request bread when I clearly mentioned pastries?
As I was descending on him in my anger for buying the wrong thing, refusing to take it back, and being the one who actually requested it,
he screamed, "People are too much!"
I stopped to hear what he was saying.
It turned out that, upon getting there, he realized that with the number of people around, his chances of being attended to and getting that pastry were slim, so he just went for bread while others contended over the pastry.
I was shocked, sorry, and ashamed of myself.
How could he have made such a calculating decision on his own at his age?
I could have waited to hear what he had to say from the start; he was going to explain his choices.
I felt really bad😔
For the rest of the day, I held him tight and did things to ease myself of that parental guilt I was feeling and still feel as I share this incident with you.
I had to make a promise to my kids and myself that I would listen more because that was all my boy needed from me.
I am still sorry for letting my anger get the best of me and am so proud of the man he is becoming.
