The Celebration on International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers (May 29)
The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is celebrated annually on May 29 to honor the service, courage, and sacrifice of over 1 million civilian and uniformed personnel who have served under the UN flag since 1948. The global observance pays special tribute to the nearly 4,500 peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The official 2026 observance takes place under the theme "Invest in Peace," calling for decisive action to ensure personnel have the resources needed to carry out their complex mandates.
One of the main examples of successful stabilization by the United Nations comes from Timor-Leste, a context that was marked by 24 years of conflict during the Indonesian occupation and violent internal crises after independence. With support from the United Nations, the small Asian nation achieved self-determination and pacification. Timor-Leste (East Timor), located in Southeast Asia, gained independence on May 20, 2002, after 25 years of conflict and UN administration, making it one of the world's youngest nations. The country recently became the 11th member of ASEAN in October 2025, marking a significant milestone for the small island nation.
