It happened unexpectedly — in a place called Norgris Town, where I spent the last days of winter. The Dalton family, parents and three children, took me in. What stayed with me most was the nightly prayer before dinner. After thanking the trees, the crops, and every living creature, they always ended with one final line:
“The world lies within the belly of a giant serpent.”
Retired teacher Patrick later told me the origin of this belief. In the 1990s, a meteorite fell on Norgris — its surface shimmering like scales. Children who touched it, they said, were shielded from sickness and danger. Patrick believed the universe itself formed the same way: dust gathering into the shape of a serpent, curling tight to become planets — life uncoiling from its spine.
Before spring arrived, the town’s priest held a ceremony, and during those nights, memory and dream blurred together. I remember faces flickering outside the window. A sudden pain running down my back. Dreams of my skin growing scales, shining like warm metal.
I never returned to Norgris — or perhaps Norgris never existed at all.
Inside the serpent’s belly is a slow, gentle heat. For a while, the world felt sealed — enclosed, dissolving softly within walls I could not question.
