theCommonist is a creative space, a film and animation studio based in Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. We are not afraid to be common. In fact, we strive to be common.

We are a collaborative of talented directors, CG supervisors and motion artists. We work from idea development, shooting, animations, editing, visual effects, digital-compositing to finishing for all forms of medias, including commercials, music videos, corporate video, web content, animated series and feature films. The ‘Commonist’ is a portmanteau word, a manifesto we set ourselves forward to ac

hieve as media practitioners. ‘Common’ is our ideology, our starting point and approach to things and matters around us; yet the affix ‘Ist’ is to reflect our attitude towards professionalism. We see excitement in everyday life, beauty in ordinariness; where the banal can be imaginative, monotonous becomes significant. The final non-2024 feature film is OASIS OF NOW, which started the year with a bang by going to Berlinale Forum after its world premiere in Busan. And throughout the year, the film kept picking up prizes and nominations - congrats Darrel!

Za utrzymywanie uważnej bliskości, która rzuca wyzwanie widzom i rzeźbi rzeczywistości wietnamskich migrantów w Malezji poprzez nowatorską poetykę przestrzeni, People's Jury zdecydowało się przyznać nagrodę specjalną filmowi “Oaza na chwile”, w reżyserii Chia Chee Sum.

For maintaining an attentive proximity that challenges its viewers and for carving the reality of the Vietnamese migrant experience in Malaysia through new poetics of space, the special mention goes to Oasis for Now by Chia Chee Sum.
