I’ve been on YouTube since late July 2019 and consistently producing over 100 videos on a variety of topics. I’ve covered the concept of greng jai เกรงใจ, màn-sâi หมั่นไส้, sǐn sɔ̀ɔt (Sin Sod) สินสอด or Thai dowry, and etc. I also love playing piano and singing so I made some videos for Thai songs for those who find music as a fun part of learning the language and one of those is Thai national

anthem–the video that I’m the most proud of as a Thai national. While I enjoy giving private lessons, I am also hoping to teach bigger groups of students because to me teaching is about creating an impact in the community and so teaching on YouTube, page, and TikTok is something that allows me to achieve that goal at a larger scale.

Learning Thai script is not just for the sake of reading Thai, but it can help improve your pronunciation, too, if you pay attention to the sounds and make sure they are RIGHT! :D

Hi everyone, I'd like to teach you the word "to SWIM" today and I find it interesting because its spelling and pronunciation don’t quite match.

ว่ายน้ำ /wâai-náam/ - to swim 🏊‍♀️
ว่าย /wâai/ on its own can also mean "to swim" 🏊 in a context that it's clear you're talking about swimming pools or swimming.

A: ไปว่ายน้ำกัน
/bpai wâi-nâam gan/
Let's go swimming.
B: วันนี้ว่ายไม่ได้ เมนส์มา
/wan-níi wâai mâi-dâai, men maa/
Today, can't. My period came.

1️⃣ Technically, according to the spelling, the FIRST syllable is pronounced with -าย aai (LONG glide ending sound), but in conversations, we pronounce it quickly and shortly like วั่ย /wâi/. If you use only one word ว่าย /wâai/, the vowel length needs to be LONG.

2️⃣ For the SECOND syllable, on the other hand, น้ำ has the short vowel ำ /am/ but it's pronounced like -าม /aam/ "น้าม"

น้ำ /nám,náam/ (meaning "water) 💧 is a common word in Thai and it's usually pronounced long if it's placed as a second syllable and pronounced short (just like how the spelling signifies) if it's placed as a first syllable.

✅ So why do we need to make an observation and take note? Because even though Thai script helps you understand Thai better and also helps with your pronunciation, sometimes the pace, cadence, and rhythm affect how those words are actually said by native speakers Thai.

‼️ This is something I always teach in my Read/Write Thai class to make sure my students will understand both the form (spelling) of the word and how it actually sounds in isolation, formal speech, or casual, everyday life conversations so that they can understand Thais better and they will also be understood by Thais better, too. 😀 and I would love to encourage other fellow teachers to do the same kaaaaaaaa 😊

ยาว yaao = long

อ้าว = Oh no, whoa
ด่า = to insult
ตัวเอง = oneself (yourself in this case)
ทำไม = why
คะ = female polite particle
เนี่ย = ending particle (showing surprises in this context)

อ้าว ด่าตัวเองทำไมคะเนี่ย
- Whoa, why are you insulting yourself? Lol

Did you know the word มั่ว mûua? It's an interesting words because it has multiple meanings and one of those is "PROMISCUOUS" 😃

มั่ว is a falling tone with ม as an initial consonant and the vowel ัว (diphthong--a combination of ู and ะ).

1️⃣ First meaning of มั่ว is:
--> Mixed up, disorganized

It is used when things are messy, or done without order or clarity. It's often used with แบบ

✅ เขาทำงานแบบมั่ว ๆ ไม่ได้วางแผนอะไรเลย
káo tam-ngaan bɛ̀ɛp mûua-mûua,
mâi-dâai waang-pɛ̌ɛn à~rai ləəi
= He works in a completely unorganized way,
with no planning at all.
✅ ครูคนนั้นสอนมั่วมาก
kruu-kon-nán sɔ̌ɔn mûua mâak
= That teacher is all over the place
when teaching

2️⃣ Second meaning of มั่ว = To be promiscuous

✅ผู้ชายคนนี้มั่วมาก
pûu-chaai-kon-níi mûua mâak
= This guy messes around with
so many people.

✅เธอไม่เคยมั่วกับใครเลย
təə mâi-kəəi mûua gàp krai ləəi
= She’s never been promiscuous.

3️⃣ Third meaning of มั่ว = To guess randomly (like when someone gives an answer with no real basis)

✅ ทำข้อสอบไม่ได้ ตอบมั่วหมดเลย
tam kɔ̂ɔ-sɔ̀ɔp mâi-dâai,
dtɔ̀ɔp mûua mòt-ləəi
= I couldn’t do the exam,
so I just guessed all the answers (without
real basis).

✅เขาพูดมั่วตลอด
káo pûut mûua dtà~lɔ̀ɔt
= He always talks nonsense.

Which meaning do you like the most or hear the most kaaaaa? :D
