Thai With Sarah I'm a teacher, influencer, entrepreneur and soon-to-be published author! Learn Thai with me ♥️
(1)

I’ve been on YouTube since late July 2019 and consistently producing over 100 videos on a variety of topics. I’ve covered the concept of greng jai เกรงใจ, màn-sâi หมั่นไส้, sǐn sɔ̀ɔt (Sin Sod) สินสอด or Thai dowry, and etc. I also love playing piano and singing so I made some videos for Thai songs for those who find music as a fun part of learning the language and one of those is Thai national

anthem–the video that I’m the most proud of as a Thai national. While I enjoy giving private lessons, I am also hoping to teach bigger groups of students because to me teaching is about creating an impact in the community and so teaching on YouTube, page, and TikTok is something that allows me to achieve that goal at a larger scale.

ผ่านไปไวเหมือนโกหก (pàan-bpai wai mʉ̌ʉan goo-hòk) literally means “time passed so fast, like a lie.”

Let’s break it down with nuances:
✅ ผ่านไป pàan-bpai = to pass (by)
→ Refers to time or events passing.
✅ ไว wai = fast / quickly
→ Emphasizes how quickly something happened or ended.
✅ เหมือน mʉ̌ʉan = like
✅ โกหก goo-hòk = a lie, to lie
☑️ เหมือนโกหก mʉ̌ʉan goo-hòk = like a lie
→ Figurative; means it’s so fast it feels unreal, as if it didn’t really happen.

👉 The phrase expresses surprise or disbelief at how quickly time has gone by. It’s not about lying — it’s an idiomatic, emotional expression kaaaaaaaa

💬 Comparable English feelings:
☝️ Time flies.
☝️ It’s crazy how fast that went.

We don't use เร็ว (reo) for this one even though เร็ว (reo) means the same as ไว (wai). I think it's because ไว (wai) rhymes with ไป (bpai) kaaaaaaaa

P.S. I keep my promise—One bikini photo per year 😌🙈

I saw this post and I wanted to ask you guys, too, kaaaaaa—What is one piece of advice you would like to give to newbies/beginners when it comes to learning Thai.

No.1 answer under this post is LEARN THE SCRIPT.

What about you? What would be your advice for them?

The only Thai word that I have learned that use ฒ as an initial consonant is the word เฒ่า kaaaaaa. Thank you for all the comments!

เฒ่า tâo (falling tone) - elderly
ผู้เฒ่า pûu-tâo (both falling tone) - elder, senior

ผู้เฒ่า is also the name of the consonant ฒ

I'll teach you "dirty old man" tomorrow and it has เฒ่า in the word 555

Last week, we talked about อาย (aai), ขี้อาย (kîi-aai), and เขิน (kə̌ən), which all relate to being "shy"— but each with different nuances.

Today, let’s look at อาย (aai) VS อับอาย (àp-aai), น่าอาย (nâa-aai) vs น่าอับอาย (nâa-àp-aai), and I'd also like to teach you this word ขายหน้า (kǎai-nâa).

✨ อาย (aai) vs อับอาย (àp-aai)
♦️อาย (aai) = to feel embarrassed by something
♦️อับอาย (àp-aai) = to feel ashamed of something

อับอาย (àp-aai) expresses a stronger and deeper feeling than อาย (aap), and it’s often used with รู้สึก (rúu-sʉ̀k), which means “to feel."

Examples ✅

1️⃣พ่อแม่รู้สึกอับอายที่ลูกสาวท้องก่อนแต่ง
(pɔ̂ɔ-mɛ̂ɛ rúu-sʉ̀k àp-aai tîi lûuk-sǎao tɔ́ɔng-gɔ̀ɔn-dtɛ̀ng)
→ The parents feel ashamed that their daughter got pregnant before marriage.

2️⃣ ฉันอายเวลาพูดผิด
(chán aai wee-laa pûut pìt)
→ I feel embarrassed when I say something wrong.

✨ น่าอาย (nâa-aai) vs น่าอับอาย (nâa-àp-aai)
♦️น่าอาย (nâa-aai) = embarrassing
♦️น่าอับอาย (nâa-àp-aai) = shameful

Use น่าอาย (nâa-aai)for something mildly embarrassing or awkward, while น่าอับอาย (nâa-àp-aai) carries a stronger tone — something morally or socially disgraceful.

Examples ✅

3️⃣ เรื่องนี้น่าอายมาก
(rʉ̂ʉng-níi nâa-aai mâak)
→ This is very embarrassing.

4️⃣ เรื่องนี้น่าอับอายมาก
(rʉ̂ʉng-níi nâa-àp-aai mâak)
→ This is very shameful.

NOW let's look at this word ขายหน้า (kǎai-nâa)
☑️ ขาย (kǎai) = to sell
☑️ หน้า (nâa) = face
☝️ ขายหน้า (kǎai-nâa) = to feel humiliated or lose face (big big time like experiencing public shame)

♦️ขายหน้า (kǎai-nâa) is similar to อับอาย (àp-aai) but it's stronger. It’s also often used with รู้สึก (rúu-sʉ̀k) (“to feel”).

When used with น่า (nâa), it becomes น่าขายหน้า (nâa-kǎai-nâa), which means "shameful" or something that makes the person lose ace.

🚨 น่า () + V. - worthy of feeling or taking that action

YES, น่า and หน้า are homophones (sound the same!)

Examples ✅

5️⃣ พ่อแม่รู้สึกขายหน้าที่ลูกสาวท้องก่อนแต่ง
(pɔ̂ɔ-mɛ̂ɛ rúu-sʉ̀k kǎai-nâi tîi lûuk-sǎao tɔ́ɔng-gɔ̀ɔn-dtɛ̀ng)
→ The parents feel humiliated that their daughter got pregnant before marriage.

6️⃣ สองคนนั้นเป็นชู้กันแล้วถูกจับได้ น่าขายหน้าจริง ๆ
(sɔ̌ɔng-kon-nán bpen-chúu-gan lɛ́ɛo tùuk-jàp-dai, nâa-kǎai-nâa jing-jing)
→ They were having an affair and got caught — how humiliating!

I'll include the link for the previous post below na kaaaaaa. Let me know if you have any questions!

FEMALE students of mine 👩 🧍‍♀️ — both former and current!
Please GIVE A SHOUTOUT here and let people know how much you like (or don’t like 😆) my class, my homework, and me as a teacher (and person! 555) 😁

❌ There’s often a MISCONCEPTION that I have way more MALE students than female ones — it’s actually the opposite!

✅ Right now I have 25 students in total (both group and private), and more than 15 are female kaaaa 💕

🥲 It’s just that many of them haven’t made it to my meetups yet — either they couldn’t make it or they’re just a bit too shy to meet other students!

‼️ And just to be clear — I never tolerate rude or insulting comments under my meetup photos. A few people in the past tried to put others down, and those accounts have been blocked.

Hi, I got asked about this word สวรรคต (สะ-หวัน-คด / sà~wǎn-kót). It is strictly used only for a King or Queen and also for royals of the highest rank such as
สมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราช เจ้าฟ้ามหาวชิรุณหิศ สยามมกุฎราชกุมาร and สมเด็จพระเจ้าบรมวงศ์เธอ to mean “pass away.”

It’s a royal term that comes from Sanskrit, meaning “to ascend to heaven.”

And “heaven” in Thai is สวรรค์ (สะ-หวัน / sà~wǎn) 😇

Let’s break it down for the rising tone of the second syllable:
1️⃣ The second syllable has a rising tone because ว follows the tone rule of ส, a high-class consonant.
→ High class + live syllable + no tone mark = rising tone
2️⃣ The double ร (รร) is pronounced like ัน (an)

So สวรรคต is pronounced สะ-หวัน-คด ✨

We had such a great time last night kaaaaaa at my meetup. Next meetup will happen next year kaaaa
