What’s Going On in Thailand? The Big Battle between Taxis vs GRAB ! 🚕
.
In the Mid of May 2025, Thailand found itself in a heated public debate. Local taxi associations came together to pressure the government, claiming that foreign ride-hailing apps like GRAB, Bolt, and Lineman are stealing their jobs. They say these platforms have caused a big drop in the number of people using traditional taxis. The taxi groups are now demanding the government shut down these apps, arguing they’re hurting Thai drivers. They even threatened protests and airport blockades if their demands weren‘t met.
.
This sparked a lot of discussion online and across the country. But most of the public seems to be leaning toward supporting GRAB and other apps. Because traditional taxis in Thailand don’t exactly have the best reputation. Common complaints include refusing passengers (especially Thais), overcharging, not using the meter, or only picking up foreign tourists. So, more and more people have turned to ride-hailing apps, which offer a smoother and more reliable experience.
.
So, Whose side are you on?

The Hidden Meaning Behind Taxi Colors in Thailand. (That No One Tells You About) 🚦🚕
🟢🟡 Two-Tone Taxis (Green & Yellow)
These are the most common ones you‘ll see. They’re privately owned and driven by individual taxi drivers, not a company. These drivers own the car and work independently. Service is ”often“ better with these, but not always depends on the driver.
Single-Color Taxis
These belong to taxi companies. Each color usually represents a different company.
Such as
🟠 Orange – Bowon Taxi Cooperative
🔵 Blue – Thai Taxi Cooperative
🟣 Pink – Sahamit Taxi Cooperative
🔴 Red, Yellow, Purple, White, and others – Usually company cars rented by drivers or repainted vehicles waiting to switch company affiliations.
Ps. ”The color doesn’t affect the fare. All taxis charge the same rate based on the meter.“
So, why do the colors matter? 🔽
They help identify which company the taxi belongs to. Super useful if you leave something in the car or need to report an issue. 👍
