People confuse political power with linguistic influence. Empires rise and fall. Languages still absorb vocabulary from the cultures around them. Thai royal language, or Rachasap, contains many Old Khmer court terms. That does not erase Thai identity. It reflects history, religion, administration, and centuries of contact in mainland Southeast Asia.
Same thing happened everywhere.
English absorbed French.
Japanese absorbed Chinese.
Thai absorbed Khmer, Pali, and Sanskrit.
History becomes more interesting when we stop treating linguistic influence like an insult.
