She spent four years connected to machines that breathed for her.
Princess Bajrakitiyabha eldest child of His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn died Thursday in a Bangkok hospital. She was 47.
She fell unconscious in December 2022 while training dogs for an army exhibition. A bacterial infection. She never fully recovered.
But here's who she was before that hospital bed.
A law graduate from Thammasat. A master's and doctorate from Cornell. Ambassador to Austria. A public prosecutor who chose to spend her career fighting for incarcerated women, one of the most overlooked groups in any justice system, anywhere in the world.
Her project, Kamlangjai "Inspire" helped rehabilitate Thai women in prison before their release. Her work led the UN to adopt what's now known as the Bangkok Rules international standards for the treatment of female prisoners.
In 2013 she said: "Without the rule of law, without a good justice system, it's always chaos."
Many believed she was being quietly prepared for one of the most important roles in the kingdom's future.
Instead, the country woke up to a national announcement of grief.
Outside the hospital, mourners held photos of her through the years. One woman said she'd stayed the night, still hoping for a miracle.
Thailand will hold her funeral with full royal honours at the Grand Palace.
A life dedicated to people most of society had already given up on.
