Mossad Chief David Barnea: 'Never Again' Means the Iranian Regime Must Fall

In a stark address marking Holocaust Remembrance Day, Mossad Director David Barnea declared that Israel's campaign against Iran is far from over, vowing that the extremist regime in Tehran must be replaced to neutralize an existential threat to the Jewish state.
Barnea, speaking at a ceremony in Jerusalem, drew a direct parallel between the horrors of the Holocaust and the current dangers posed by Iran, warning against complacency in the face of genocidal rhetoric and nuclear ambitions.
"The naive are wrong to think that the Holocaust belongs to the past, that in today’s reality genocide is impossible," Barnea said. "That calls for extermination cannot occur and that hatred threatening the existence of an entire people cannot grow. The Iranian threat has grown stronger and stronger before our very eyes, and before the eyes of the world, almost completely unhindered."
The Mossad chief recounted repeated Israeli warnings about Iran's nuclear program and its arsenal of ballistic missiles, which he described as posing an existential danger to Israeli citizens. Ultimately, he said, Israel "took our fate into our own hands and launched two necessary wars."
Barnea highlighted the recently concluded "Lion’s Roar" War (also referred to in some reports as Operation Lion's Roar or Rising Lion), in which the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), supported by Mossad intelligence and in close alliance with the United States, conducted an unprecedented series of strikes against Iranian targets. The 40-day campaign inflicted severe damage on the regime, targeting those who have explicitly called for Israel's destruction.
"We provided precise intelligence to the Air Force and struck missiles that threatened Israeli citizens," Barnea stated. "The Mossad operated once again in the heart of Tehran." He emphasized the "strong alliance and historic cooperation" with the United States in fighting for "the values of justice and freedom," with key achievements including the disruption of Iran's central objective of annihilating Israel.
Despite the intensity of the fighting and significant blows delivered, Barnea made clear that the mission remains incomplete. "We did not expect this mission to end immediately once the fighting subsided, but we planned — yes, we planned — for our campaign to continue and to find expression also in the period after the strikes," he said.
Barnea's remarks underscored a long-term strategy beyond immediate military action. "Our commitment will be fulfilled only when this extremist regime is replaced. That same regime that seeks our destruction must vanish from the world. This is our mission," he declared. "We will no longer stand by idly in the face of yet another existential threat. Out of the clear commandment: Never Again."
The speech comes as Israel and its allies assess the aftermath of the conflict, which followed years of escalating tensions over Iran's nuclear program, proxy militias, and missile capabilities. Barnea has previously been reported as assessing that targeted strikes weakening the regime's leadership and repressive apparatus could pave the way for internal change in Iran, with intelligence efforts continuing to support potential popular uprisings.
Barnea's address is among his final major public statements before his scheduled departure from the Mossad in early June 2026.
The comments have drawn international attention amid ongoing debates over the war's outcomes, ceasefire arrangements, and the future of Iran's leadership. Israeli officials, including opposition figures, have emphasized that lasting security requires addressing not only military capabilities but the regime's ideological drive against Israel.
As Holocaust Remembrance observances continue, Barnea's invocation of "Never Again" frames Israel's actions as both a defense of its existence and a moral imperative rooted in historical memory.
