Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchaworamahawihan, or popularly known as "Wat Arun", is a temple with a long history and is equally important to Buddhism and Thai history. It is assumed that this temple was built since the Ayutthaya period. It was originally called "Wat Makok".
Later, during the reign of King Taksin the Great, he established Thonburi as the capital and marched his army by boat to Wat Makok in the early morning. Therefore, the temple's name was changed to "Wat Chaeng" as a memorial. Later, during the reign of King Rama II, a major renovation of the temple was carried out and the temple was given a new name, "Wat Arun Ratchawararam".
Wat Arun has a distinctive architecture, namely the Wat Arun Prang, which is 81.85 meters high. It is decorated with Chinese porcelain, colored tiles, and shells, creating beautiful and unique patterns. In addition, Wat Arun is home to many important Buddha images, such as the Phra Phuttha Maha Mani Ratana Patimakorn (Emerald Buddha), which was once enshrined at this temple before being moved to Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram.
Wat Arun is not only a temple with beautiful architecture. But it is also an important place that shows the long-standing prosperity of Buddhism and Thai culture.
