ILOILO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT SHOULD NOW EXPAND
Iloilo is growing. Its gateway to the world must grow with it.
Since opening in 2007, Iloilo International Airport has become one of the most important gateways to Western Visayas, connecting Iloilo to the rest of the Philippines and the world while supporting tourism, commerce, investment, and the movement of people.
But Iloilo today is no longer the Iloilo of 2007.
Demand has grown dramatically. Passenger traffic rose from 1.32 million in 2009 to more than two million annually by 2019—clear evidence of how quickly the airport has moved toward the limits of its original design.
The challenge now is not simply how to accommodate today’s passengers.
It is how to prepare for tomorrow’s Iloilo.
The airport should therefore begin with immediate improvements to its existing facilities. Aprons and aircraft stands should be expanded to accommodate more aircraft, including larger jets. Arrival and pre-departure areas, Gate 1, parking facilities, and access roads should be upgraded to improve passenger flow, processing, circulation, and the overall travel experience.
But these improvements should not be viewed as isolated fixes.
They should be the first phase of a broader, long-term expansion strategy.
Iloilo should now seriously plan for a second passenger terminal—one designed not merely to relieve present congestion, but to accommodate the sustained growth of Iloilo and Western Visayas for decades to come.
That future terminal should provide capacity for more passengers, additional domestic routes, stronger international connectivity, and increased aircraft movements. It should be supported by expanded aprons and aircraft stands, improved airside infrastructure, larger parking facilities, better road connections, more efficient passenger circulation, and sufficient space for future expansion as demand continues to rise.
The principle is simple:
Do not wait for the airport to reach its limits before building the capacity Iloilo will inevitably need.
Iloilo is attracting more tourists, businesses, investments, workers, students, and opportunities. Its economy is expanding, its urban region is evolving, and Western Visayas is becoming increasingly connected to the national and global economy.
Its principal gateway must be ready for that future.
A modern, efficient, and expandable airport is more than a transportation facility. It is economic infrastructure. It shapes how easily people arrive, businesses connect, investments move, tourists enter, and opportunities reach the region.
That is why expanding Iloilo International Airport should not be viewed simply as a response to congestion.
It should be viewed as an investment in Iloilo’s next stage of growth.
Upgrade what can be improved today.
Expand what is needed now.
Plan for what comes next.
And build with enough vision that the airport will not merely catch up with demand—but stay ahead of it.
Iloilo International Airport has served Western Visayas well since 2007. It has helped transform the way Iloilo connects with the country and the world.
Now, the airport must evolve with the city and region it has helped propel forward.
Because Iloilo should not have to wait for its gateway to become a constraint on its ambitions.
Its airport should be one of the engines that carry those ambitions forward.
