Upon landing here in the apparent ‘land of smiles,’ I was under the impression that Thai people were lively, helpful, smiley, and just open-minded in general. Over the ensuing months in my stint, my life turned right upside down. I allowed people to tell me that I wasn’t good enough because the color of my skin. The comments such as “ewwww! Black man! Low-class! Pimp! Black people are the worst of them all. You look like a smug. Can you translate into Gullah language?” Some of the most insidious remarks I’ve ever gotten (and I’m from America) were suggestive. I accepted them and it become my world......until one day....
