Ministry of Defence Warns Public Against Fraudsters Impersonating Military Units – Urges People to Follow Only Official Pages

August 23, 2025 – Colonel Veerayuth Nomsiri, Deputy Spokesperson of the Ministry of Defence, revealed that General Nattaphon Narkphanit, Deputy Minister of Defence, Acting Minister of Defence, expressed concern over the discovery of fake news and distorted information related to national security. In particular, fraudsters have been found impersonating the military or defence agencies by creating fake bank accounts and social media pages to solicit donations in the name of helping soldiers stationed at border areas. Such actions may cause financial loss and compromise citizens’ personal data.

General Nattaphon has instructed all relevant agencies to step up public awareness campaigns and warn citizens not to trust or transfer money into unverifiable accounts, and not to scan QR codes or install applications from untrusted links, as these may be used by scammers to steal money or personal information. Furthermore, spreading or sharing false information online may constitute a violation of the Computer Crime Act, which carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to 100,000 baht, or both.

On August 22, 2025, the 2nd Army Area Command issued a public warning that certain pages have been imitating its name and logo to disseminate misleading content. The public is therefore urged to follow only the official page of the 2nd Army Area Command, which currently has over 2.5 million followers, as well as the official pages of the Royal Thai Army and other relevant agencies, to ensure that all information received is accurate, reliable, and not misused by fraudsters.

Colonel Veerayuth added: “The Deputy Minister of Defence cares deeply for the people and urges everyone to exercise caution when receiving information. For any matters related to the military, please follow only official pages. This is essential to prevent fraud and to safeguard our nation’s security together.”

🪖 The 1st Army Area Operations Center clarified its mission in Ban Nong Chan, Sa Kaeo, where from July 26–28 troops removed foreign military personnel and dismantled encroaching structures on Thai soil. Concertina wire was installed as a defensive measure—not a border demarcation—to prevent illegal entry and crime.

👥 Over 200 Cambodian civilian households remain, with relocation requiring government-to-government talks via the Joint Boundary Commission. The army stressed it is following agreements from the August 7 General Border Committee meeting and awaits further directives.

The 1st Army Area Operations Center, through its Burapha Task Force, has provided a detailed clarification of its mission to address the encroachment on Thai sovereignty in the Ban Nong Chan area of Sa Kaeo province.

In a statement on August 19th, the center confirmed that an operation took place from July 26th to 28th. The mission involved removing foreign military personnel and dismantling military structures that had encroached on Thai territory, based on the 1:50,000 scale map. Cambodian soldiers and their families found in the area were escorted out without the use of weapons.

Following the operation, concertina wire fencing was installed. The army emphasized that this is a tactical defensive measure to enhance security and is not a formal border demarcation. The fence also serves to prevent illegal entry and transnational crimes. The operation was conducted with caution due to the presence of over 200 encroaching households of Cambodian civilians who remained in the area.

The statement noted that the long-term solution of relocating the community from Thai sovereign territory is beyond the military's authority and must be addressed through the Joint Boundary Commission and government-to-government talks. The 1st Army Area is currently adhering to the agreement from the August 7th General Border Committee meeting and awaits further orders.
