Revitalising Our Blue Backyard: Community Power Drives Coral Rehabilitation in Nukunonu
Another incredible day of collaboration unfolded as we worked to rehabilitate the vibrant coral of the Nukunonu Lagoon. For the second phase of this vital project, our efforts were focused on Akauloa, the majestic reef situated just outside Talikilagi.
This MiCORe Team initiative, led by Programme Manager Iuta Isaako, was powered by the steadfast support of the Nukunonu Taupulega and a dedicated task force from the Taulelea group. This partnership highlights the "Nationally Coordinated, Locally Delivered" spirit of the mission, bringing together expertise from:
- Aleki Manuele (Department of Fisheries)
- Iohefo Wright (Department of ENDRE)
- Sio Isaia (Department of Energy)
- Mr. Leano (Deputy Principal & Lead for Climate Change Learning, Matiti School)
- Patrick Aloisio (Media Officer, Office of the Nukunonu Taupulega)
Highlights from the Frontlines of Conservation:
- Interagency Synergy: A successful demonstration of the LivC approach, bridging national planning with local Taupulega Nukunonu action.
- Hands-on Rehabilitation: The team carefully selected live coral fragments to be grafted onto specialised rehabilitation "biscuits." These were secured onto steel tables and placed within a designated conservation zone at Akauloa to thrive.
By combining national strategy with deep-rooted community knowledge, we are ensuring the resilience of our reefs for generations to come.
