Especially now that autumn has finally arrived.
Especially here, on one of the most beautiful beach in Fethiye.

Did you know you can have breakfast in Türkiye and be on a tiny Greek island just 20 minutes later?

Kastellorizo sits right off the Turkish coast, near Kaş. A ferry connects the two in about 20 minutes. It’s tiny, with pastel houses wrapped around the harbor, fishing boats, tavernas, and incredibly clear water.

Most people visit Kastellorizo for just one day. I stayed for five, and honestly, even that wasn’t enough.

I expected a sleepy little island where everything would go quiet after the day-trippers left. Instead, every evening the waterfront was full, with busy tavernas and bars and people staying out late.

One morning, I woke up at sunrise to the sound of people laughing somewhere down by the harbor. I remember thinking, “What happy people they must be.”

And that’s probably what surprised me most about Kastellorizo. There isn’t a long list of things to see or do, but the island feels incredibly alive. You stop checking the time, sit longer over dinner, swim when you feel like it, and somehow five days disappear.

Have you ever heard of Kastellorizo?

Would you ever expect to find a children’s playground inside an active prison?

In Türkiye, you actually can. I’ve been to one myself.

There’s an open prison in Dalaman with a restaurant, a dessert café, a flower shop, a clothing store, and a children’s playground. The staff are inmates: waiters, cooks, shopkeepers, florists, even the guys selling dondurma. They even had live music when I was there.

And it’s genuinely beautiful. If you didn’t know where you were, you’d never guess you were on prison grounds.

Before they’re released, inmates work real jobs, learn practical skills, and interact with people from outside the prison. So when they leave, they already have work experience and a better chance of rebuilding a normal life instead of starting from zero.

This is the first time I’ve seen a system like this, and there’s something very humane about it.

I’m curious: does anything like this exist in other countries?

A hotel room with a private pool right outside your door is a whole different level of luxury.

That’s exactly what I found at Lindos Aqua Terra in Rhodes. I stayed there at the end of September last year, and the timing couldn’t have been better: the sea was still warm, there were far fewer tourists, and it still felt like summer.

The hotel is beautifully designed, with its own private beach in a quiet bay. Perfect for introverts and romantics.

And if you’re heading to Lindos, GAEA is a must even if you’re not staying at the hotel. The food is divine.👌

Have you ever been to Greece in September?

I’ve heard people spend all winter missing their Cape Cod summers. After my first visit, I can see why.

We stayed at a 120-year-old inn in Falmouth. Coffee and homemade cookies in the garden with rabbits hopping around, homemade breakfasts, and pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, which was definitely a surprise for me as a Ukrainian.

We explored Falmouth, walked by the ocean, ate the famous local ice cream, and had margaritas at a Mexican bar. But the thing I didn’t expect to love this much was back to the quiet.

The inn is only five minutes from Falmouth’s busy Main Street, yet it’s incredibly peaceful. After 10:30 PM, even the whirlpool tubs have quiet hours. Sometimes the only thing you hear is a bed gently creaking 🤭 By the way, the owner told me couples who get married here don’t get divorced.

Cape Cod lovers, what do you miss most?

One of the most unusual places in Türkiye is a mathematics village in the mountains of Izmir.

While most people come to Türkiye for the resorts, some come here to study math.

There are open-air amphitheaters for lectures and a library that impressed me just as much as the ones at Yale. At Yale, I expected it. Here, my jaw actually dropped. This isn’t a university or even a regular school.

The village was built with donations and a lot of volunteer work from students and mathematicians. When construction first started, the authorities even tried to shut it down.

What do you think of this side of Türkiye?

Imagine waking up here… on a small Greek island and seeing the Aegean Sea straight from your bed. Even from the shower.

This is Anchor House on Symi, a small villa right by the sea, away from the busy waterfront. The name comes from the idea of an anchor: a place that brings friends and family together and makes you want to stay a little longer.

My days here were pure hedonism: swimming at sunrise, homemade breakfast, outdoor whirlpool bath, rosé on the terrace, dinner at the taverna next door.

Symi isn’t only for summer, people swim here even in November. In early November the island celebrates the Feast of Archangel Michael of Panormitis, one of the biggest events of the year.

Ever had a view like that from your bed?
