I hesitated for a long time before coming to Ukraine.
Not because I didn’t want to go, but because I wasn’t sure if it was the right thing to do.
How do you visit a country that is at war?
How do you talk about a place where people are living through something most of us can barely imagine?
After spending a week here, I don’t have all the answers.
I came to Ukraine for one simple reason:
To my friend
We’ve known each other for more than eight years. Just before the war started, he decided to move to Ukraine. Back then, neither of us could have imagined what was about to happen.
When the war began, I told him I would visit once it was over.
But years passed and the war didn’t end.
So instead of waiting for a future that might never arrive, I finally came.
Behind every headline are people trying to build a future, maintain friendships, run businesses, raise families and find moments of joy despite everything around them.
Meeting my friend again after all these years made me realize how easy it is to keep postponing things until circumstances are perfect.
Sometimes we tell ourselves we’ll visit someone later. We’ll reconnect when life calms down. We’ll make the trip when the timing is better.
But life doesn’t always wait for perfect conditions.
I left Ukraine with a deeper understanding of the human cost of war, but also with immense respect for the strength and resilience of the people who continue living through it every day.
