Evergrey - Escape of the Phoenix (2021)
Evergrey was formed in 1995 in Gothenburg, Sweden as a progressive power metal band, outside of the melodic death metal part of the Gothenburg scene. Since then, the band's lyrics have always been of the darker sort, and the same can be said of the band's imagery. The Dark Discovery was recorded in 1996 and released in 1998, and Solitude, Dominance, Tragedy was recorded and released in 1999. While those two albums dealt with a variety of ideas, many later albums have been concept albums, dealing with issues like paranoia and alien abduction in In Search of Truth (2001).

Recreation Day, released in 2003, is an album that covers many issues, ranging from death and mourning to general fear and sorrow, all of which contribute to a greater concept of self-reformation. These ideas are explored from many different points of view, such as someone contemplating su***de "As I Lie Here Bleeding", mourners after a funeral "I'm Sorry," a cover of Dilba Demirbag's hit, and dying people's looking back on their "unforgivable" sins "Unforgivable". "Unforgivable" also acted as a catalyst for the next album, The Inner Circle (2004), which expanded on the issues described in the song: cults, religion and child abuse.

On 4 April 2006 Evergrey released their sixth studio album, Monday Morning Apocalypse. The album debuted at No. 6 in Sweden.

Later that year, Evergrey played at many festivals throughout Europe: among others, Sweden Rock Festival, Download Festival, Arvika Festival, Masters of Rock, Storsjöyran and Sziget Festival. From 5 to 30 May the band toured the United States with In Flames, Nevermore and Throwdown. On 15 September they headlined Prog Power VII in Atlanta, Georgia.

On 24 October 2006 Evergrey started a new European tour. They were supported by fellow Swedish death metal band Avatar, and they visited Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Denmark and Sweden.

Evergrey released their seventh studio album, Torn, in September 2008, continuing with their trademark lyrical themes of desperation and despair. Jari Kainulainen permanently filled the role on 6 August 2007, who also played bass on Torn.

On 8 May 2008 Evergrey announced that they had signed a deal with Steamhammer/SPV. This included the release of their new album and the entire back catalogue. It also was announced that the new album, Torn, would be released early in September 2008. As the deal includes the band's entire back catalog, there is the possibility of re-releases of previous Evergrey albums with the inclusion of added bonus material.

In July 2008 Swedish/Danish band Amaranthe announced that keyboardist Rikard Zander, along with In Flames bassist Peter Iwers, would make a guest appearance on their upcoming album.

In May 2010 it was announced that Jonas Ekdahl, Henrik Danhage and Jari Kainulainen have all left Evergrey by mutual decision because of problems with the band members interacting with each other. They called it quits as to not ruin the friendship they all have with each other.

An article posted on 13 November 2010 on Evergrey's blog contained dates for upcoming concerts as well as the confirmation of a new album titled Glorious Collision on 28 February 2011.

Via Facebook posts in November 2013, while writing the next Evergrey album due for release in 2014, the band first confirmed that drummer Hannes Van Dahl would be leaving the band to join Sabaton full-time, and then due to "problems working together" guitarist Marcus Jidell would also be leaving.

In August 2014 the release of the music video for King of Errors from the forthcoming Hymns For The Broken revealed that Henrik Danhage and Jonas Ekdahl had returned to the band. Hymns for the Broken was released on September 2014. The band released two more albums after that, The Storm Within in 2016 and The Atlantic in 2019. Those three albums were mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen and form a conceptual trilogy.

Their twelfth album, Escape of the Phoenix will be released on February 26, 2021 .

Nightfall - At Night We Prey (2021)
Description:

It has been seven long years since the world was last blessed with new music from the melodic blackened death metal stalwarts of NIGHTFALL. While the band has been absent from the scene since the release of 2013’s Cassiopeia, their legacy has not been forgotten. Comprising the holy trinity of Greek metal – along with ROTTING CHRIST and SEPTICFLESH – NIGHTFALL was the first extreme act in the country to sign an international deal, introducing the world to the burgeoning Mediterranean scene in the early 90s. Now, the band is plotting a triumphant return.

During the first decade of NIGHTFALL’s lifespan, the band headlined stages across Europe. Thereafter, went on to dominate international festivals such as Brutal Assault, Sonisphere, and Wacken, the latter of which the band solidified their legacy as the first ever Greek band to earn an envied spot at the renowned festival. The band eventually made the decision to switch to a studio act before they went completely silent. When reflecting upon the sudden disappearance after a steady rise from the underground, vocalist and founding member Efthimis Karadimas explained that it was due to an all too familiar beast – depression. “It’s because of depression that kicked in as early as mid-00s. I can write for hours and get into details about stuff gone wrong or mistreated situations, but the basis of all discouragement to move on has been depression and the effort required to get over it.” Despite the dark days, Karadimas did not abandon music entirely, moving on to form THE SLAYERKING, a gothic doom metal band that has released two agonizing full-length records between 2016-2019.

Alas, the abrupt departure of the band was not the final “goodbye” as NIGHTFALL has been reinvigorated with a new lineup and coveted deal with Season of Mist. Karadimas has reunited with original NIGHTFALL guitarist Mike Galiatsos, who helped define the band’s sound during the early years. With the addition of drummer and producer Fotis Benardo (ex-SEPTICFLESH) as well as guitarist Kostas Kyriakopoulos (THE SLAYERKING), the band is finally ready to release the tenth studio album. In addition to the long-awaited new music, Season of Mist will also be re-issuing the band’s original albums that were produced by Holy Records back in the 90s. This is not the only news the band has to share as NIGHTFALL has also vowed to finally perform again. “We are gonna play these live, including stuff never played live before,” says Karadimas.

‘At Night We Prey is a very dark and personal effort, tackling the topic of Karadimas’s battle with depression. “A beast I have experienced its teeth deep into my soul, I decided to come out and share that experience with metalheads,” Karadimas laments. “This is the least I can offer now to the big fight against depression. If we do not stop this, it will eat us all alive. Share your pain, speak openly about it. This is the only way to kill the demons in your mind.”

Kreator - Under the Guillotine (Compilation) (2021)
The story of KREATOR's meteoric rise to the global elite of thrash metal bands from their humble beginnings in Essen, Germany, began under their first name of TORMENTOR in the early 1980s. It was their "Blitzkreig" and "End Of The World" demos changing hands in the era's bustling underground tape-trading network that exposed them to the international metal community. Positive word of mouth soon attracted the attention of Germany's own metal start-up Noise Records, which signed the newly re-christened KREATOR to a deal.

KREATOR's tenure at the label spawned six studio albums and established them as one of the most influential on the thrash scene, one they dominate to this day. 1985 debut "Endless Pain" was savage; its crude thrashing quickly had the underground metal world abuzz with excitement. 1986's follow-up "Pleasure To Kill" is considered the band's first "classic" album and raised the bar with more diversity of tempos, while losing nothing in terms of ferocity or speed. 1987's "Terrible Certainty" further cemented the reputation that KREATOR were one of the genre's finest exponents. In 1989, the band closed the decade with the thrash triumph of "Extreme Aggression", their biggest seller to date. 1990's huge magnum opus "Coma Of Souls" confirmed them in thrash history before they diversified their sound on the experimental "Renewal" in 1992.

"Under The Guillotine" is a celebration of KREATOR's Noise Records discography and is the definitive collection of their first decade of recorded work.

Phantom Druid - Stages of Twilight (2021)
Tjeerd de Jong is without a doubt one the most prolific musicians in the Dutch scene. Next to working his own record store and label, Tjeerd is the frontman of stoner doom monoliths Stone in Egypt, sludge demons Witchcraft 71 and death doom duo Demon Lodge, just to name a few. My personal favourite though, is his one man band PHANTOM DRUID. Last year’s ‘Death & Destiny’ (2020 - Off The Record Label) was an ultra heavy slab of pure Pentagram worship that regularly found its way to my turntable. That de Jong isn’t one to sit back and relax is proven by the fact that, a little over a year after their debut, I’m currently listening to it’s follow-up, 'Stages of Twilight’ (2021).

If you’ve ever heard any of de Jong’s many bands and projects, you know the man knows his riffs. From the opening notes of “Far Beyond Oblivion” it’s clear that Stages of Twilight is going to be another front to back riff fest. Often, the riffs are supplemented with melodic overdubs and screaming solos. Just like on the debut record, these 10 tracks could have been written by Pentagram’s Victor Griffin and would fit in perfectly on any Saint Vitus record.

Vocally, de Jong is clearly inspired by the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Bobby Liebling. While his vocals aren’t over the top or extravagant, they complement the dark atmosphere of the music well. The subtle harmonizing effects add an extra touch of dread to the already bleak sound.

Next to fuzzy riffing, Phantom Druid doesn’t shy away from some supporting synth work and classy acoustic guitars to build the right atmosphere, like on “Revelations by Night” or “Electric Sky.” The former is a definite highlight on the record. The track has everything from trudging doom riffs to heavy chugging, working towards a magnificently solemn and dark finish.

On the intro of “Echo of Time,” Stages of Twilight seems to move into epic doom territory, with a riff that has some heavy Candlemass vibes. I would almost be disappointed that the track moves back into safe waters after that, if the rest of the track wasn’t so good.

The proto doom sledgehammer that is Stages of Twilight finishes off with what is probably the most uptempo Phantom Druid track out there. While “Black Clouds, Silver Wings” is in essence a doom track, the track resembles an early ‘70s hard rock song more than anything. Imagine a dark Blue Öyster Cult track, mixed with late ‘70s Black Sabbath.

Warrior Path - The Mad King (2021)
2021 The Mad King

Warrior Path is an Epic/Heavy Power Metal band from Greece feat. Bob Katsionis(Firewind) & Daniel Heiman(Lost Horizon) led by guitarist Andreas Sinanoglou.

Two years have passed since the self-titled debut of Warrior Path that hit the world's underground metal scene like the Hammer of Thor, getting everything from raving reviews to scoring the highest ranks on various 'Album Of The Year' lists. Continuing their journey, main man and songwriter Andreas Sinanoglou and musician/producer Bob Katsionis (Firewind/Outloud/Serious Black) along with drummer Dave Rundle, are coming back with another epic tale, the tale of "The Mad King". This time they are joined by one of the most legendary singers in the history of power metal: Swedish vocal phenomenon Daniel Heiman (Lost Horizon) taking the torch from Yannis Papadopoulos (Beast In Black). Musically, the band seems to have evolved in all aspects, leaving the obvious influences and forging an own sound. The excessive number of ballads of the debut gave its place to furious songs, the Iron Maiden-ish twin harmonies became epic metal riffs, while the production itself is warmer and even louder and punchier than the one of their debut. Still, the influences vary from Riot, Heaven's Gate and Scanner to Crimson Glory and early Queensrÿche.
According to main songwriter of the band, Andreas: "Every time I'm writing music, I always do it having a full album in my head. My vocal lines always reflect a particular style of singing. Yannis was fitting perfectly the songs I had composed for our debut due to his lyrical and melodic approach and we were more than happy with the final result. But for our sophomore album, I realized there was a more epic, tense and generally 'darker' atmosphere and to my mind there was no one else than Daniel to do it. We knew it would be hard to find him, didn't know if he would be interested in doing it, given that he is very picky on the stuff he puts his voice on, but in the end it all worked out pretty well, he is a total pro and we're glad he did go that extra mile to make the album sound as it does."
Daniel Heiman quotes: "After interesting discussions with the band members and since we agreed very quickly on all levels, I knew it would be an awesome collaboration and when I heard the new music I was blown away. Old fans of Warrior Path and fans of my voice will not be disappointed! Also, I know a lot of new fans will emerge with this amazing release."
"The Mad King" was recorded during the first pandemic global lockdown in the new Sound Symmetry Studio of Bob Katsionis in Athens, Greece and analog mastered once more by Nasos Nomikos at VU, Productions in Piraeus, Greece.
For the magnificent cover artwork, the band once again worked with Bulgarian artist Dimitar Nikolov bringing to life a scene from the Palace of the Mad King as told in the title track of the album.
