Minister in the Ministry of Public Utilities Clyde Elder claimed he was misquoted by some sections of the media and never said that trade unions which did not support the UNC government should not get the ten per cent increase that the Public Services Association (PSA) got.

The PSA campaigned openly and heavily with the UNC in the run-up to the April 28th general elections.

He previously told media that other unions will now face challenges in reopening negotiations.

The comments received backlash from the Estate Police Association and the TT Registered Nurses Association, who interpreted them as divisive and raised serious concerns about political involvement in trade union activity.

“I never said that,” Elder told reporters outside Parliament on December 5.

What I did say was that if you signed for four per cent, you can’t now come to ask for ten per cent. I said that and I stand by that.”

Elder noted Prison Officers’ Association president Gerard Gordon calling his statement hypocritical, but asserted it was the other way around.

The 10% settlement given to the Public Services Association actually works out to 15 per cent, according to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s statement in the House of Representatives on December 5.

Reaffirming the government’s decision to make payouts from the $3.8 billion back pay before Christmas to the PSA only, Persad-Bissessar said the issue has been outstanding for a decade.

“This settlement corrects a long-standing injustice and ensures that those who serve the state must be treated with dignity and fairness.”

She said under her previous administration, the 2011-2013 period concluded with a 14 per cent increase for PSA represented workers, closing the cycle and providing relief.

“In 2015, when the PNM took office, the 2014-2016 and the 2017-2019 cycles remained unsettled. From 2015 to early 2022, no settlement was concluded and by 2022, it was publicly acknowledged that workers received no increase since 2014. We are now in 2025.”

Private drones are banned from being used near the Scarborough Esplanade during the Tobago Day Cultural Concert and Drone Show on December 6, according to a notice from the Office of the Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA).

The show, which includes a drone display, is expected to begin at 6.30 pm on December 6.

A release from the THA said additional drones in the area may affect the navigation and coordinated movements of the drones being used as part of the show.

“We appreciate the public’s understanding and cooperation as we work together to create a safe and enjoyable experience for all,” the release said.

A Marabella waitress was abducted, robbed and threatened her with a knife while she was being transported home.

The 20-year-old victim told police that she had been waiting near Royal Castle on Point-a-Pierre Road, San Fernando, for transportation to her home around 3:40 a.m. when she boarded a gold Nissan Cube, with three unknown men.

The driver initially drove along the Southern Main Road, Marabella, but when the woman requested to be taken to her home, the vehicle diverted to the vicinity of Tropical Plaza.

There, one of the suspects, described as slim-built, brown complexion, long hair tied in a ponytail, wearing a grey hoodie, allegedly pointed a knife at her and announced a robbery.

The suspect reportedly grabbed her purse and stole $1,000 representing her earnings from the past week. The driver then drove the vehicle to the Petrotrin Roundabout, Point-a-Pierre, where the woman was ordered out. The suspects then fled north along the Southern Main Road toward St. Margaret’s.

The victim made her way to the Marabella Police Station to report the incident.

The Citizens Against Noise Pollution of Trinidad and Tobago (CANPTT) is putting its full support behind Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her decision to restrict the use of certain national venues for high-intensity leisure events.

A release from CANPTT says the recent pronouncements from the Prime Minister are aimed at protecting the health and well-being of citizens, particularly the sick, the elderly, infants, students, and residential communities.

The group noted that for decades, communities across the country have endured excessive noise levels that disrupt life, often without recourse or protection.

It says while it can understand the concerns about operational and economic challenges now facing certain organisations due to the decision, it cannot override public health and community wellness and comfort.

The organisation noted that potential financial loss must be weighed against the daily reality of students, children, and residents struggling to study, rest, and live in a safe environment.

Recent data published by the Small Arms Survey suggests that while there has been a relatively small increase in the number of automatic weapons being seized, handguns (pistols and revolvers) are the most common category of firearm recovered by authorities.

The quantity of weapons found and other trends in gun trafficking and violent crimes were highlighted in a report compiled by the survey in collaboration with Caricom IMPACS, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and the University of the West Indies (UWI).

The report titled Pathway to Policy: Fi****ms Trafficking and Public Health in the Caribbean, acknowledged that while there has been a “modest rise” in the seizure of AK and AR-type rifles in recent years, they still reflect a generally small percentage of the total number of guns seized.

Senior researcher with the Small Arms Survey Matt Schroeder says trafficking trends, as it relates to the kind of guns seized, has not changed to a large extent over the years.

The report notes that most high-capacity magazines—capable of holding in excess of 30 to 50 rounds of ammunition—were typically seized from shipments bound to either T&T or the Dominican Republic.

He said such large weapons and weapon accessories tend to only be in demand for criminals in countries where there is fierce opposition either from law enforcement or rival criminal gangs.

However, when contacted for comment, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) in charge of the Criminal Division Richard Smith acknowledged that local police have also observed trends where the most common type of gun seized from criminals was pistols.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has reaffirmed her commitment to transparency where government's plans to restart the former Petrotrin refinery in Pointe-a-Pierre are concerned.

A statement on her page said Persad-Bissessar met with the refinery reactivation committee at the Diplomatic Centre, St Ann's, to review the latest developments on restarting the refinery.

The statement said Persad-Bissessar "reaffirmed her commitment to transparency, national benefit, and ensuring that Trinidad and Tobago advances with a refinery plan that truly serves our people."

The statement concluded, "Further updates will be shared as discussions progress."

Former energy minister Kevin Ramnarine chairs the committee.

The refinery was closed in November 2018 when Petrotrin was restructured into Trinidad Petroleum Holdings Ltd (TPHL).

Its reopening was one of the UNC's major campaign promises in the run up to the April 28 general election which the party won.

On November 26, Energy Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal said he expected to get a report from the committee by "at least within the first couple of days in December" about the feasibility of restarting the refinery.

Both men were armed with cutlasses. One of the men struck her several times with a cutlass, while the other tied her hands with a rope and covered her eyes and mouth with a white cloth.

The criminals then stole $2,800, which represented the day's sales. They were both wearing jerseys to cover their heads and fled the scene.

The police described the suspects as East Indian and slim.

The vendor managed to free herself and alerted the Barrackpore Police Station. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Minister of Works & Infrastructure: “Diplomatic Centre Is the People’s House, Not the PM’s Private Space”

Minister of Works and Infrastructure Jearlean John pushed back against claims that upgrades at the Diplomatic Centre are being done for the Prime Minister’s personal comfort, stressing that no public building is refurbished for any one individual. She said the facility required basic cleaning, repairs, and maintenance to make it safe and functional for staff, visitors, and citizens, noting that the Prime Minister herself refers to it as “the People’s House.”
