White Fungus

White Fungus White Fungus is an independent arts magazine based in Taiwan.

《白木耳》是? Each cover of White Fungus is derived from a scan of the can.

Founded by brothers Ron and Mark Hanson in 2004, White Fungus began as a quasi political manifesto, with copies of the first issue produced on a photocopier, wrapped in Christmas paper, and hurled anonymously through the entrances of businesses throughout the city of Wellington. Now a magazine featuring interviews, writing on art, new music, history and politics, White Fungus takes a dialogical ap

proach to the work it covers. The name of the publication comes from a can of white fungus drink that the Hansons found in their local supermarket in the industrial zone of Taichung. White Fungus has held interdisciplinary art events at galleries including P.P.O.W (New York), Taipei Contemporary Art Center, ARTSPACE (Auckland) and Adam Art Gallery (Wellington). The publication is held in library collections including The Museum of Modern Art (New York), The New York Public Library (Art & Architecture Collection), Taipei Fine Art Museum, The Southbank Centre (London), Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, National Library of Australia and Te Papa (National Museum of New Zealand). White Fungus was part of the exhibition Millennium Magazines at Museum of Modern Art (February 20-May 18, 2012). The exhibition was a survey of magazines made by contemporary artists since 2000.

Brian Eno and Beatie Wolfe have just released twin albums "Lateral" and "Luminal" on Verve Records. To mark the occasion, the duo partnered with KCRW on "Feeling of the Day," a new series of radio spots exploring words for emotions with no equivalent in English. The first segment introduces “ailyak,” a Bulgarian word for the art of going slow and enjoying the process. Between studio sessions, Wolfe and Eno answered questions from White Fungus about their evolving collaboration.

HH was an audio-visual duo formed by Taiwanese sound artists Yao Chung-Han and Yeh Ting-Hao in 2013. The duo was active in the Taiwanese experimental art and music scene until Yeh’s untimely passing in 2024. The duo mined the gray area where noise, electronic dance music, and visual imagery meet, and interact. Jeph Lo wrote about HH for the third issue of White Fungus’ sister publication The Subconscious Restaurant in late 2014. You can now read the article online.

Morton Subotnick is a name synonymous with the evolution of electronic music. In 1963, he began collaborating with inventor Don Buchla in San Francisco to develop what is widely regarded as the world’s first analog synthesizer. His groundbreaking 1967 album, Silver Apples of the Moon, was the first music commissioned specifically for the LP format. In 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Subotnick appeared on Paul Holdengräber’s podcast, The Quarantine Tapes, to reflect on his life, work, and how he was navigating the challenges of the time. The conversation is now available to read online.

Robert Ashley is widely considered one of the great American composers of the post-Cage generation. Ashley created radical new forms of opera, incorporating electronic music and pioneering the use of opera in television. His multimedia projects expanded upon the form in surprising, often perplexing ways.

In 2013, Kurt Gottschalk spoke to Ashley for a major feature in the 13th issue of White Fungus. At the time, Ashley was working on his opera Quicksand, which he completed before his passing in March 2014. The article can now be read online.

Our Story

White Fungus is an art magazine based in Taiwan. The publication began in 2004 as a quasi political manifesto protesting the building of an inner-city motorway in Wellington, New Zealand. Copies of the first issue were printed on a photocopier, wrapped in Christmas paper and hurled anonymously through the entrances of businesses throughout the city.

In 2009 the publication's founders, Ron and Mark Hanson, relocated to Taiwan. White Fungus is now a print magazine featuring in-depth interviews and articles on art, music, history and politics. The name of the publication comes from a can of “white fungus” the Hansons discovered in their local supermarket in Taiwan. Each cover of White Fungus is derived from a scan of the can.

White Fungus has held interdisciplinary art events at galleries and venues including P.P.O.W (New York), Taipei Contemporary Art Center, ARTSPACE (Auckland) and Adam Art Gallery (Wellington).
