Made in Taiwan series — Writing my memoir was a microcosm of my whole life

As I wrote each chapter — or as I interacted with everyone involved in making the book happen, editors, cover designers, publishers, distributors — I kept watching the very things I was writing about show up in my own behavior.

I'd question myself. Am I doubting the designer's expertise right now?
Am I just being overly perfectionist again?
Am I feeling not good enough again?

But after writing this book, it gave me a kind of distance from my own life. I started to be able to notice — ah, that's really my imposter syndrome talking again.

So I can let it walk alongside me, and just keep doing the work.

**Made in Taiwan series #07 — Turning 30 in a job I couldn't lie myself into staying at**

Back then, I really loved going to the gym. Strength training wasn't really popular in Taiwan yet, so there weren't many people lifting, and honestly, I kind of enjoyed being seen as a freak for it. I figured if people thought I was weird, that meant I was an independent, modern woman.

My personal trainer actually invited me to come train to become a coach myself. But I'd just started my career. I wanted to keep climbing the white-collar ladder — because it was something I hadn't been able to get in New York.

Slowly though, I started to lose the ability to keep lying to myself.

I didn't actually enjoy talking about product margins or breaking down corporate structures. At all. But at the same time, I didn't want to take the risk of becoming a personal trainer either.

Then, completely out of nowhere — at the very last minute of being 29 — I felt like I'd been struck by lightning. I literally jolted upright in bed.

*What the hell am I even doing?*

I kept saying I wanted to take control of my life, that I wanted to do what I love. But I was just scraping by.

If I'm not doing what I actually want to do, I'm just wasting my life.

Okay, I told myself, once I get my year-end bonus, I'll make the switch.

But a few days later, when I walked into the office, I couldn't last a single day.

From that day on, I started frantically updating my resume — looking for a way out, looking for a

- **A Columbia grad working at a hot pot restaurant**

The second time I went to the US for grad school, I was studying sociology at Columbia in New York. But because of a string of wrong choices and an imposter syndrome, I didn't go find a full-time job after graduation. Instead, I worked three part-time jobs, ending each day waiting tables at a hot pot restaurant.

Was I really oblivious to the class I'd already entered, and to all the opportunities within reach? Or did some part of me believe that abandoning my origins was a betrayal, and that scrubbing floors at the hot pot restaurant was my way of atoning? Maybe what it really came down to was this: I was afraid. Afraid of stepping into an elite world with rules I didn't know. Afraid that the girl who grew up in a wet market would eventually be exposed. So I'd rather stay in the familiar safety of the hot pot restaurant.

- The daughter my parents no longer recognized

I'd sit with my Asian friends watching "S**t Asian Parents Say" videos, mocking those scoldings and put-downs disguised as love — the kind that say a child is never enough. *Word for word*, we'd laugh. As if turning my own upbringing into someone else's joke could make it hurt less.

But the truth was — I still longed for my parents' love. I still wished I could live, like I once did, safely inside the protective net they had woven so carefully around me.

But if I kept embracing all the cultural rules a dutiful Asian daughter is supposed to follow, then this "Angie" I'd worked so hard to build would fall apart. And I didn't want to go back to being that humble little girl people looked down on when I first arrived in America.

So I chose to forget every piece of evidence of love I held in my memory.

Even as I felt afraid of this stranger I was becoming, I had no choice but to grit my teeth and keep going.

- Rejecting My Culture Identity

Everyone who grew up in Taiwan has had the experience of picking an English name for cram school or English class.

Back then when I was in middle school, I was obsessed with David Tao's songs. He has a love song called "Angeline," so when I got to the US, I introduced myself to my American friends as Angeline.

Most of them didn't say much. But one friend furrowed his brow and said, "Hmm. I don't like this name. From now on, I'm going to call you Angie."

I was really upset. I thought — who are you to rename me?

But at the same time, I thought — fine. From now on I'll go by Angie. Because I didn't want to be seen as an outsider anymore. I didn't want to be seen as that Asian person, that person facing racial discrimination.

So I started calling myself Angie. And I began doing very "American" things. I left behind the Taiwanese peace-sign pose, started learning to stand with my hands on my hips like Americans, grinning from ear to ear.
And as I put on this American identity, I also began to resent Taiwanese culture.

- Culture Shock When Studying in America

The first time I studied abroad, I went to Arizona State University on a government scholarship.
Back then I thought — I'd graduated from NTU Foreign Languages, I had a government scholarship, in my country I was considered a pretty top-tier student. A very OK student. My English should be good enough to let me continue being an OK student.

But no one cared.

And actually my English was terrible. I didn't realize how bad my English was until I got there. People said hi to me and I had no idea what they were saying. Ordering at Subway, I had to frantically look up every item on the menu.

Also, when people saw me walking down the street, they would roll down their car windows and yell "F U, F U Asian," and drive off. Things like that.

I think this shaped my first impression of America — and many later, very solid impressions. To the point that when I later met Paul and started getting to know his big family, I was still scared to meet them. Even when I saw their kids, I'd worry they might say something carelessly racist to Paul — "Why are her eyes so small?"

Paul said to me: "That's just your imagination as an international student. Growing up, for me, people of all skin colors are just people. It's you who, because of your past experiences, has put a label on yourself."

----------
- The Start of My Imposter Syndrome

I think the first time imposter syndrome started running my life was when I accidentally got into a top girls' high school.

I'd been a problem student my whole life. No one expected me to get into any good school. But I was good at guessing on multiple-choice tests, and I got in by accident.

I felt like it was a huge mistake.

If I'd never attended a good school, maybe I wouldn't have imposter syndrome at all. Maybe I'd be a confident, happy person by now.

But once I was thrown into that school, I realized I had no idea how to interact with my classmates. Their parents were professors, doctors, politicians, business elites. Sometimes they'd say something about their family, then add, "You wouldn't get it." And I'd feel cut off.

That was the beginning of so many forces shaping my later life.

So even though I later got into good schools on my own merit, that sense of class-based alienation has followed me ever since.

Parenting has been an education in humility.

Humility. That word keeps coming back to me. It is the ultimate learning in this journey of shepherding another soul, another generation onto this earth.

Humility — that I have to let them go for them to grow.

Humility — that I cannot protect them from pain.

Humility — the realization that we may be guardians, offering influence, but cannot control the destiny of this soul in our care.

Humility — to cede control and take on trust.

Humility — that we are a small part of this universe. But we are also a necessary part of life’s continuum. “

Karena de- Souza "B.Parenting (Humility)

-HowIDiscoveredMyImposterSyndrome

I didn't know the term "imposter syndrome" until I started creating online and doing my own podcast.

Before that I kept wondering — why am I so afraid of success?

So I started Googling "I'm afraid of success." Up came imposter syndrome. I read the description and thought, oh my god, that's been my life for the past thirty years.

But when you're living inside it, you don't know. You just feel like you don't deserve to stand among other people. You keep asking yourself — why am I even here? What gives me the right to be here?

And then you might do self-destructive things. Like I wrote in my book — in high school, while everyone else was studying seriously for the college entrance exam, I was being a party animal, putting on makeup in class, skipping cram school to go on dates.

I had no idea this thing was running my life.

When you can't see it, it's a force that shapes your life from the dark.

More stories are in my memoir Made in Taiwan: Leaving to Find the Way Home; From Wet Market to Ivy League, A story of Love, Fear and Becoming. English Translation coming soon!
