Learning from Your Example and Your Teaching
By Aris Lee
Father’s Day 2010
Dear Dad,
When I was a child, our family operated a food processing factory. Everyone was busy, and you hardly had any time to take care of me. Instead, you often took me with you in your delivery truck as you traveled from place to place delivering goods.
Although I was still very young, you never stopped teaching me. Even while driving, you patiently taught me not only driving skills but also the right attitude toward work. You told me to be an honest and upright person, to work hard, and to live responsibly, because diligence and integrity are the keys to a meaningful life.
Not long afterward, our factory went bankrupt because of financial difficulties. Our family had to move into a relative’s warehouse. Despite such a tremendous change, you never lost heart. You worked every job you could find to support the family, and wherever you worked, you brought me along. You patiently taught me practical skills and even allowed me to help at construction sites.
I still remember one particular incident. We were working at Bitou Cape, and while you were busy, my younger brother and I played in a nearby school. Before leaving, I secretly took several books from one of the classrooms and loaded them into the truck. When we arrived home, you discovered what I had done and disciplined me.
More importantly, you personally drove all the way back to the school, returned the books, and apologized to the principal.
That day, you taught me a lesson I have never forgotten—to be honest, to stand firm in what is right, never to lie or steal. You told me that even if we were poor, we must never lose our dignity. No matter how difficult life became, we should never earn money dishonestly. You also assured us that, however hard life was, you would always take care of your three children.
Your words have remained in my heart ever since.
For many years, I rarely expressed my concern or appreciation to you. We seldom talked heart-to-heart, and there were few opportunities for us to sit down together. Yet none of this ever diminished your love or your sacrifices for me.
During my teenage years, I was rebellious and caused you great pain. Sometimes I was beaten by others; at other times, I was the one fighting. Eventually, I even ran away from home, wandered aimlessly, and stopped going to church.
When I felt that my life had completely lost its purpose, I prayed to God.
God answered me with only one sentence:
“My child, go home. Let your father love you. Get up, pack your things, and return to your family.”
In the end, I chose to go home. I apologized to you and returned to church.
Although you said very little, I knew your silence was filled with forgiveness.
For a long time, I thought I understood you well. Yet all I remembered were your shortcomings.
As I gradually came to know Jesus more deeply, I also came to know myself. Through Him, I began to see you in a completely different light. I realized that my own faults were far greater than yours, and I finally understood the burdens and hardships you had carried for our family all those years.
I know I was not a filial son. The Bible teaches that true godliness includes honoring one’s parents. Although I failed in this area, I now desire to learn to honor you, just as you faithfully cared for Grandpa.
Now that you are growing older, I know you sometimes worry about having enough money for retirement.
Dad, please don’t worry. Although I am not yet able to provide everything you need for a comfortable retirement, I promise that I will take good care of you, just as you have always taken care of us.
When I have nothing else, I know I still have a father who loves me.
Not only on Father’s Day, but every day, I want to tell you:
“Dad, I love you.”
Just as you have loved me unconditionally.

Father’s Day 2010
