GOVERNMENT WARNS AGAINST FURTHER VIOLENCE IN CHINGOLA

By vickram emmessa mubita,chingola

The Copperbelt Province Minister, Hon. Elisha Matambo, has warned against further violence and damage to property in Chingola, following yesterday's riots that saw several properties destroyed. The Minister made the statement yesterday while inspecting the damage caused by protesters and criminals in Chingola, accompanied by Zambia National Service (ZNS) Commander Lt. General Maliti Solochi, Inspector of Police Mr. Graphel Musamba, and other stakeholders.

"We expressed our disappointment at the behaviour exhibited by some rioters and criminals who took advantage of the situation," Hon. Matambo said. "Looking at the magnitude of the damage, there are elements of criminals, and if there is any political hand, their days are numbered."

The Minister explained that the motive behind the removal of small-scale miners from Sensele Mine was to allow negotiations that have been ongoing between the government, Sensele Mine owners, and small-scale miners' leaders. He assured the people of Chingola that the government will work hand in hand with the security wing to ensure that Chingola remains peaceful and that their lives and properties are safeguarded.

"We want to create a safe, conducive, and legal mining environment for our youths," Hon. Matambo said. "We will not sit and allow this situation to happen again. We also cautioned our citizens not to be used by anybody, including those trying to gain political relevance, to damage properties and cause anarchy in Chingola and the Copperbelt Province at large."

The Minister assured the people of Chingola that the government is committed to creating a safe, legal, and conducive mining environment for small-scale miners in Chingola and beyond. He encouraged the youths to engage with the government whenever they have issues, rather than resorting to violence and damaging properties.

Several properties were damaged during the riots, including a grader and a compactor belonging to AVIC International, shops, a police post, a newly built community hall, and several other properties. The government has assured the people of Chingola that it will take all necessary measures to prevent further violence and protect lives and property. The Minister urged the citizens to remain calm and to work with the government to create a peaceful and prosperous environment for all.

In a show of commitment to the welfare of the people, President Hakainde Hichilema has worked hard to bring investments into the Copperbelt Province and the entire country for the benefit of citizens, including youths. Solwezi General Hospital Senior Medical Superintendent, Dr. Kitanda Sondashi, confirmed the development in an interview with ZNBC News in Solwezi. Dr. Sondashi expressed sadness over the loss of life, stating that the hospital had been providing medical care to the victims since the accident occurred yesterday.

According to Dr. Sondashi, the hospital is currently treating eight patients for various injuries, with one patient in critical condition and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The medical team is working tirelessly to ensure the patients receive the best possible care.

"We are doing everything possible to stabilize the patients and provide them with the necessary medical attention," Dr. Sondashi assured. "We will continue to provide medical care to the remaining patients until they are fully stable."

ERB APPROVES K62.1 BILLION INVESTMENT IN ENERGY SECTOR, BOOSTING ZAMBIA'S ENERGY SUPPLY

By vickram emmessa mubita,25 July,2025.

The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has made significant strides in promoting investment in Zambia's energy sector. During the 2025 mid-year press briefing, ERB Director General Eng. Elijah Sichone disclosed that the board has authorized 288 standard licenses and 45 construction permits, representing a pledged investment of ZMW 62.1 billion (approximately US $2.5 billion).

These licenses and permits are expected to enhance the reliability, sustainability, and diversity of Zambia's energy supply. The standard licenses were distributed across key energy sub-sectors, with 160 licenses granted in the petroleum sub-sector, 122 in renewable energy, and 6 in the electricity sub-sector. These licenses supported a wide range of critical energy activities, including the establishment of new petroleum service stations and strategic electricity infrastructure projects.

One notable approval was the licensing for Zambia's largest grid-connected solar PV plant, the 100 MW Chisamba Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Power Plant, licensed to Kariba North Bank Extension Corporation Limited. This project is expected to significantly contribute to the country's renewable energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

The 45 construction permits approved include several strategic electricity infrastructure projects. These include the 50 MW solar PV power plant in Baluba Maposa, Luanshya district, by Maposa Solar Company Limited, and the 50 MW solar PV power plant integrated with 20 MWH battery energy storage system (BESS) in Choma district by Cooma Solar Power Plant Limited. Other notable projects include the 28 MW solar PV power plant at LuanShya Power Station in Kapiri Mposhi district by Lunsemfwa Hydro Power Limited, and the 100 MW solar PV power plant in Chief Moono's area, Mumbwa district by Sun Share Energy Limited.

These developments are expected to address ongoing supply challenges and support the Government's agenda to increase copper production and reinforce Zambia's emerging role as a regional energy hub. The ERB's approvals and initiatives are poised to significantly boost Zambia's energy sector, driving economic growth and development.

In the petroleum sub-sector, the ERB reported a marginal decline in global oil prices, attributed to demand shifts and OPEC production decisions. The average price of petroleum products on the global market traded at US$85.31/BBL during the first half of 2025. Despite this decline, the ERB has taken steps to enhance the security of diesel supply in the country.

The approval of the TAZAMA open access guidelines has opened the door for multiple Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to transport low-sulfur gasoil from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to Ndola. Through a competitive bidding process, three companies were selected to begin diesel supply in April 2025, while tenders for June, July, and August 2025 were also effectively allocated.

The use of the Drag Reducing Agent (DRA) on the TAZAMA pipeline has improved the daily pump-over volume from an average of about 2.8 million liters per day to 3.6 million liters per day. This is expected to enhance the security of diesel supply and reduce transportation costs.

Furthermore, Zambia and Tanzania have agreed to construct a new multipurpose fuel pipeline aimed at enhancing fuel security and reducing transportation costs. The new pipeline is to be constructed along the existing wayleave of the current TAZAMA pipeline.

The ERB has also made significant progress in the electricity sector. The board has set out to develop a number of regulatory frameworks to respond to emerging technologies and address some of the challenges faced by the Electricity Supply Industry (ESI). These frameworks include the Smart Grids Regulatory Framework, Revision of the Power Quality Management Framework, Development of a Transmission and Distribution Loss Reduction Strategy, and Finalizing the Electric Vehicle Regulatory Framework.

The ERB is finalizing the draft regulatory framework for electric vehicle (EV) models and systems that meet the market's safety and quality requirements. This framework is expected to facilitate the effective and sustainable development and operation of EV infrastructure, installations, and facilities in the country.

The ERB's approvals and initiatives are poised to significantly boost Zambia's energy sector, driving economic growth and development. The board's efforts to enhance the reliability, sustainability, and diversity of the country's energy supply are expected to address ongoing supply challenges and support the Government's agenda to increase copper production and reinforce Zambia's emerging role as a regional energy hub.

With a pledged investment of ZMW 62.1 billion, the energy sector is set to experience significant growth and development. The ERB's commitment to developing regulatory frameworks that respond to emerging technologies will ensure that the sector remains competitive and sustainable.

As the country continues to develop its energy sector, it is essential to ensure that the regulatory frameworks are in place to support the growth of the industry. The ERB's efforts in this regard are commendable, and it is expected that the board will
