After 4 days of learning, creating, and testing at the Innovation Lab & Design Thinking Workshop in Arusha, participants have developed new prototypes to help fight misinformation and disinformation in Tanzania.

The prototypes include practical, user focused ideas from tools that help verify information to creative ways of educating the public.

These early solutions can strengthen accurate reporting, build public trust, and protect communities from mis/disinformation.

โ€œKila ubunifu tunaofanya lazima uendane na mazingira sahihi.

DAY 3: FROM FACTS TO IDEAS BUILDING SOLUTIONS THAT COUNTER MIS/DISINFORMATION
Day three of the Innovation Lab & Design Thinking Workshop in Arusha organized by IMS, JamiiAfrica, and UTPC is all about strengthening factual journalism and turning insights into practical solutions.

Today, trainers are guiding participants through key areas that shape credible and innovative media responses, including:
- Introduction to Fact-Checking
- A live demo of a fact-checking platform (e.g., Jamii Check)
- Legal frameworks on mis/disinformation in Tanzania
- Revisiting challenges and pain points identified during Observation
- Introduction to the Ideation Phase: brainstorming, refining, and selecting the strongest ideas
- Prototyping

By combining fact-checking skills, legal understanding, and creative ideation, participants are now equipped to generate bold, practical solutions that can help Tanzanian media fight misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech more effectively.

The journey continues as ideas begin to take shape moving closer to prototypes that will make a real impact in strengthening our information ecosystem.

MOVING FROM OBSERVATION TO INSIGHT: SYNTHESIS & POINT OF VIEW PHASE

After completing the Observation phase, participants advanced into the Synthesis and Point of View stage, one of the most critical steps in the Design Thinking process.

In this session, media representatives worked within their groups to refine insights and make sense of the information gathered during interviews and field observations.

Each participant reviewed the challenges identified earlier, selected two of the most pressing issues, and collaboratively narrowed them down to three key problems affecting the fight against misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech in Tanzania.

Through structured sense-making methods including identifying patterns, themes, contradictions, and tensions participants were able to uncover hidden meanings behind what their interviewees said and did not say. This helped them clearly define user needs and sharpen their understanding of the real pain points facing audiences and newsrooms.

The result was a strong foundation for developing one impactful idea/prototype per group, grounded in evidence, user insights, and real-world media challenges.

The activity is part of Innovation Lab and Design Thinking Workshop taking place in Arusha from December 1โ€“5, 2025, organized by International Media Support (IMS) in collaboration with JamiiAfrica and the Union of Tanzania Press Clubs (UTPC).

INTERVIEW INSIGHTS THAT SHAPE REAL SOLUTIONS
During the OBSERVE phase, participants of Innovation Lab and Design Thinking Workshop strengthened their interview skills to gather deeper insights from experts and community members.

Through these interviews, they explored the real challenges behind misinformation, disinformation and hate speech why they spread, who is most affected, and what gaps exist in access to credible information.

This step is crucial because it helped participants identify the most pressing issues that will shape meaningful and effective solutions.

After collecting insights, each participant reviewed the findings and selected the two most critical issues they felt needed urgent attention.

The goal is to ensure that every idea directly responds to real problems uncovered during the interviews, creating solutions that can truly counter mis/disinformation in Tanzaniaโ€™s media ecosystem.
