KOLE: Mayor Maros Atine has opened a community road in Bala Town Council, just two months into office.

Residents of Olil, Te Keo and Aumi Abongwen are jubilating over the development, with many confessing that it was their first time seeing such a road construction machine in their community.

Mayor Atine said serving the people has always been his passion and that he loves seeing people smile as their basic needs are met.

He said opening the road was a promise he made to the people and that he fulfilled it using his own money.

LIRA: The Lira Pakistan Association collected more than 300 units of blood during a blood donation campaign held at GB Restaurant in Lira City to mark Pakistan’s 79th Independence Day.

The drive attracted members of the Pakistani community, local residents, students and other volunteers. Minister Sam Engola praised the initiative, saying the blood would help save lives across Lango, where health facilities often face blood shortages.

Lira Regional Blood Bank official Hellen Grace Anyode described the turnout as significant and encouraged other organisations to organise similar campaigns. She noted that malaria, maternal emergencies and sickle cell disease contribute to the high demand for blood.

Association President Muhammad Ateeq Nawaz said the campaign was the group’s way of giving back to the Lira community and pledged to make the blood donation drive an annual Independence Day activity.

OYAM: Oyam South MP Patrick Ogwang Obura has urged Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja to intervene and ensure fuel is provided to resume stalled road works in Oyam District.

Speaking in Parliament on August 27, Ogwang said projects, including the Minakulu–Zambia–Kamdini road, had stalled due to fuel shortages. He noted that previous government intervention only involved bush clearing, which did little to improve road access.

The MP said Oyam has over 600 kilometres of roads, including 220 kilometres under central government management, many of which are in poor condition.

He called for urgent action to resume construction and improve transport for residents, farmers and traders.

AMOLATAR: Rising water levels in Lakes Kyoga and Kwania have cut off more than 3,000 households in Amolatar District, prompting MPs to demand urgent government intervention.

Kyoga County North MP Geoffrey Ocen Kiring said the flooding has submerged farmland, displaced families and disrupted access to schools, health centres and markets. Eight villages have also been cut off after the Ocomboli Swamp road was submerged.

Other Amolatar leaders, including MPs Coline Angwech and Janet Auma Okao, called for Parliament and the central government to urgently support affected communities.

District leaders say the flooding is beyond the district’s capacity, while Dokolo North MP Joseph Jones Ogwal suggested a joint parliamentary motion. The Parliamentary Committee on Climate Change has pledged to present the concerns to Parliament for possible action.

APAC: Coffee farmers in Apac District are calling for urgent intervention after disease and insect attacks reportedly damaged coffee plants across the area.

Farmers Peter Edam and Opio Sam, who have grown coffee for over two decades, said they had never experienced attacks of this scale. They urged agricultural experts to investigate the problem and guide farmers on proper control measures.

While Lango coffee farmers’ leader Beatrice Alela said she had not received reports of the outbreak, Apac coffee farmers’ head Paskweli Ocen confirmed that his office had received complaints.

Farmers have also been advised to consult agricultural experts before using pesticides. The situation highlights the growing challenges posed by climate change, pests, diseases and limited access to agricultural extension services.

APAC: Apac Municipality Scouts and Girl Guides have pledged to use skills gained from a national competition to transform their schools and communities.

The learners acquired practical skills in innovation, leadership, water management and environmental conservation.

Arocha Seed S.S Headteacher Martin Elok said the school plans to support talented learners through bursary schemes, helping them develop their abilities alongside academics and gain practical skills that can benefit their communities.

The Girl Guides team ranked 12th out of 25 participating districts and municipalities.

APAC: Chegere Sub-county Chief Innocent Abongo has ordered outgoing LC1 and LC2 chairpersons to return government bicycles and other official property before handing over to newly elected leaders.

Abongo said 54 government bicycles have not yet been returned, warning that leaders who fail to comply risk legal action.

The new LC1 and LC2 chairpersons in Maruzi North are expected to assume office on September 2, 2026.
