ZAWADI BUS SERVICES SEEKS BAILOUT OVER UGX 1.7BN LOAN

Zawadi Bus Services has appealed to the government for intervention after Stanbic Bank ordered the company to park its fleet over loan arrears amounting to UGX 1.7 billion.

The West Nile-based transport company says the debt stems from a loan secured from Stanbic Bank in 2019 under a five-year repayment arrangement.

However, Zawadi Services says the COVID-19 lockdown severely disrupted its operations, leaving the company inactive for nearly 12 months and affecting its ability to service the loan.

The company says interest continued to accumulate during and after the disruption, pushing up the outstanding balance and making repayment increasingly difficult.

The bank's directive to park the buses has now disrupted the company's operations and put the jobs of its employees at risk.

Zawadi Services is appealing to the government to consider a bailout or facilitate dialogue with Stanbic Bank for a restructuring of the loan.

The company says it remains committed to clearing the outstanding debt but wants consideration given to the financial losses suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The dispute now raises wider concerns about the financial challenges facing transport companies in West Nile and the impact of commercial loan obligations on businesses recovering from the pandemic.

ARUA HOSPITAL STAFFING CRISIS

Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee is probing the staffing crisis at Arua Regional Referral Hospital, where only 23% of approved staff positions are filled despite serving about 2.5 million people.

Acting Director Dr Gilbert Aniku says the hospital handles around 130,000 outpatients and 22,000 inpatients annually.

An additional wage allocation could allow recruitment of 127 staff, raising staffing to just 32%—leaving more than two-thirds of approved positions vacant.

The committee is now scrutinising whether government funding is sufficient to meet the region’s growing healthcare needs.
