Former MP Kato Lubwama is dead
Former Rubaga South Member of Parliament Kato Lubwama is dead. Lubwama reportedly passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning at a medical facility.
Lubwama’s death was first announced by business associate and events promoter Andrew Mukasa alias Bajjo Events.
The former MP allegedly succumbed to complications resulting from his long-standing heart condition on June 7 at Stana Medical Centre in Bunamwaya.
Lubwama first shot to fame as an actor and playwright in the 1990s. He was the founder of Diamonds Ensemble that is credited, along with a wave of theatre companies, that revived the art-form in Uganda.
As interest in theatre going waned in the 2000s, Lubwama would transition to the nascent FM radio medium, furthering his renown on CBS FM Kalisoliso programme. He would form a powerful partnership with fellow actors Abby Mukiibi and Patricko Mujjuka as their show vied for the most listened to morning show in Uganda. His performance name on the show was Bisso.
The bubbly comedian would then stun the country with yet another career transition when he was elected the Rubaga South member of parliament in 2016. He would infamously quip, when asked why he was not vocal in parliament, “I came to eat.” Implying that his decision to seek a parliamentary seat was purely to advance his business interests and not serve his constituents.
Since his exit from parliament, Lubwama had been re-establishing himself in the entertainment field. He had founded B24 TV, started a YouTube channel and made regular appearances on other digital platforms, most memorably on NBS TV’s UnKut and Kasuku.
Unapologetic about his “silent parliamentary record” to the end, Lubwama blamed the abrupt end of his political career on the “lies” of his political rivals in the National Unity Platform headed by fellow artiste Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.
He scoffed that he did not miss parliament because it gave him a chance to return to his private businesses, including dealing in maize flour.
Lubwama was 52 years old at the time of his demise.
Kato Lubwama was born August 16, 1970. Lubwama was a twin whose brother Isaac Wasswa also passed away years ago.

Tanzania/Uganda: President Samia Suluhu Buys 7,000 Tickets Ahead of Taifa Stars Vs Uganda Cranes
President Samia Suluhu Hassan has contributed 7,000 tickets ahead of Taifa Stars versus Uganda match.
The two teams meet at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday.
Disclosing this in the city on Sunday afternoon, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry for Culture, Arts and Sports Saidi Yakuba says so far, 31,000 tickets have been sourced.
"Our target is to ensure that the stadium is packed to capacity in order to give our players deserved support," he says.
He adds: "There are tickets of different categories but we have seen it necessary to begin with buying tickets for ordinary seats.
"My message to Tanzanians is that they should come in big number on Tuesday to cheer Taifa Stars because a win takes us closer to the AFCON qualification."
However, aside from contributing 7,000 tickets, President Samia also pledged to buy each goal to be scored by the country's envoys for 10m/-.
The pledge is set to commence from Tuesday's epic match towards other incoming AFCON qualifying duels.

Ugandan women stranded with babies fathered by Chinese

It emerges that the Chinese boom has come with its share of pain, especially for African women and girls.
In Uganda’s Oyam District, for instance, over a dozen women are struggling to raise children sired by Chinese nationals after the fathers abandoned them.
According to Kamdini chairperson Sam Ogwang Alunyu, they have documented 20 children in the sub-county that were fathered by Chinese workers.
Jacqueline Adero, 20, a resident of Arukolong, Zambia Parish, is one of them.
Adero says a Chinese national, identified only as Yahang, fathered her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
JOBS
Yahang, she says, was as an employee of Sinohydro Construction Company that is constructing Karuma dam.
Sinohydro is a Chinese state-owned hydropower engineering and construction company that has won tenders for multi-billion-dollar infrastructure projects across Africa.
Adero recounts that in 2015, she went to Karuma to look for a menial job but ended up in a relationship with Yahang who promised to marry her and take her to China.
Ms Adero’s hopes to marry Yahang soon faded when she realised that her boyfriend was returning to china without her.
Five months pregnant and unable to work anymore, Adero returned to her village frustrated.
BABY GIRL
“I couldn’t believe he was returning to China for good yet I carried his five-month pregnancy at the time,” she says.
“I just returned home in disappointment to manage my pregnancy, broke as I was.”
Her mother Sophia Kolo says attempts to find out who was responsible for the pregnancy were futile until Adero delivered at Aber Hospital a year ago.
“We asked about it in vain, not until the clan council sat her down but she only said it was a fellow worker from Mukono,” she narrates.
“But we were shocked finally when she delivered a Chinese baby girl.”

Edward Muhumuza: A talent gone too soon

On March 25, 2023, our staffer and friend met an unexpected death in a car crash on Kampala-Entebbe expressway. The news of the fatal accident struck us like a thunderbolt in clear dry skies.
At 34, Edward Muhumuza, a reporter at Nation Media Group-Uganda (NMG-U), was just beginning to reap from a budding journalism career.
Like other mid-career professionals, he held lofty ideas, could be steely resolved and was ambitious about changing society, country and the world.
His was a death mourners and relations called “before his time”.
It was easy for a perceptive person who came into contact to notice that Muhumuza was clear-headed about what he wanted in life and how to go about getting it.
Born in Kyegegwa District in July 1988, he grappled with early childhood upsets and vulnerabilities of life to power through Wekomiire and Mubende Army secondary schools onwards to career-building.
He had developed a passion for journalism from an early age, leading him to pursue a diploma in Journalism at United Media Consultants and Trainers (UMCAT) School where he graduated in 2013.
Passionate about the profession, he worked his way through Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), Nile Broadcasting Services (NBS), and Vision Group’s Urban Television stations before finding NTV-Uganda, the home for his talent.
It is here that he last year snapped up the coveted Land and Property Rights award at the Uganda National Journalism Awards held by African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME).
However, to understand what made Muhumuza the award-winning journalist, it is important to understand the person he was.
He was a man of integrity who demanded the best out of himself and all those he worked with. He was honest, and sometimes quite blunt, almost to a fault but those who knew him understood that all he said came from a heart of love and wanting to make things better.

Tanzania confirms outbreak of leptospirosis
Tanzania has confirmed 20 cases of leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that has claimed three lives, in the southern region of Lindi.
Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu said test results from samples of patients in Ruangwa were positive for the disease.
Last week, samples of people presenting with fever, nosebleeds, headache and body fatigue tested negative for Covid-19, Ebola and Marburg, the ministry said, calling for calm as it worked to detect it.

“I would like to inform the public that sample testing from patients has confirmed the outbreak is leptospirosis field fever or ‘homa ya Mgunda’ as it is known in Swahili,” said Ms Mwalimu on Monday.
According to the ministry, more than 20 cases have been reported, with three deaths. Two patients are currently hospitalised.
Ms Mwalimu said contact tracing was ongoing.
What is leptospirosis?
According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira.
The bacteria are transmitted from animals to humans through cuts or abrasions in the skin, nose, or eyes that come in contact with water or soil contaminated with the urine of infected animals. But, the disease cannot be transmitted from one human to another.
What are the symptoms?
In humans, it can cause a wide range of symptoms, some of which may be mistaken for other diseases.
The most common symptoms are fever, headache, chills, cough, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pain, rash, red and irritated eyes, and jaundice.
In some cases, the disease can also lead to kidney or liver failure, meningitis and respiratory distress, which can turn fatal.
Some infected persons, however, may have no symptoms at all, CDC says

Five die of Rift valley fever in Mbarara
At least five people in Mbarara District are confirmed to have died of Rift valley fever after getting into contact with infected animals.
According to the in-charge of Bwizibwera Health Centre IV, Dr Richard Atuhairwe, the disease was detected in people after subjecting them to tests.
Dr Atuhairwe said measures to contain the disease have been put in place.
The District Veterinary Officer (DVO), Dr Andrew Akashaba, said by the end of January, the disease had been reported at two farms in Rwanyamahembe Sub-county were about 50 cows were infected.
Dr Akashaba said they are sensitizing people to stop eating meat of animals that have died of unknown causes.
Rift Valley Fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic fever that is most commonly seen in domesticated animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and can also cause illness in people. It is caused by the Rift Valley Virus. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the virus was first identified in 1931 during an investigation into an epidemic among sheep on a farm in the Rift Valley of Kenya. The disease is increasingly claiming lives in Uganda. An outbreak of the fever in Kagadi District last January killed one person.

Dentists warn public against fake toothpaste
As the world commemorated Oral Health Day yesterday, dentists warned Ugandans about the use of different tubes of toothpaste, which are flooding the market.
Dr Nevis Agirembabazi, the head of the Dental Department at Mengo Hospital, said there are many kinds of toothpaste in the market, which are unhealthy.
The experts noted that any toothpaste with Fluoride is the best. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in water in varying amounts. It helps in preventing tooth decay. Toothpastes that contain 1,350 to 1,500 ppm fluoride are highly recommended.
At Mengo Hospital, Kampala, Dr Agirembabazi said it registers at least 1,800 teeth patients per month. She attributed the prevalent condition to a lack of knowledge of brushing teeth and eating sweets. Dr Agirembabazi advised the public to always seek medical attention before getting a problem.
Dr Kenneth Chapman, a dentist at Mengo Hospital, advised people to always brush before sleeping in order to prevent holes in their teeth.
“There are two main problems that affect our teeth and one is tooth holes. The holes are caused by the bacteria in the month. When we don’t clean our teeth, these bacteria will gather on the teeth,” he said, adding: “You need to use toothpaste with fluoride because it helps to make the enamel more resistant.’’
