Around 1,500 bodies of Hamas militants found in Israel - army
Around 1,500 bodies of Hamas operatives have been found in Israel around the Gaza Strip, the army said Tuesday, as it pummelled the Palestinian enclave with air strikes.
The army had "nearly completed" evacuation of all the communities around the border, he added.
Israel is reeling under a deadly attack by Hamas operatives who entered through the border fence under a barrage of rocket fire on Saturday morning and killed more than 900 people inside Israel.
In response, Israel is carrying out a massive air and artillery bombardment of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip that has so far killed at least 687 people in the coastal enclave.

Man arrested over girlfriend’s Death

Busoga East police are holding 25-year-old Henry Kasawo on suspicion of being involved in the death of his teenage girlfriend, Ruth Ahereza. Kasawo, a resident of Kakola cell in Ivukula town council, Namutumba district.
Kasawo is believed to have committed the crime on October 6th, 2023, before going into hiding.
He was arrested when he returned home to collect some household items. Reports suggest that Kasawo had been living with Ahereza since January 2023, but their relationship was fraught with continuous misunderstandings. This led Ahereza to leave his house in August 2023.
According to an anonymous friend of Ahereza, she had been staying with Ahereza for the past month. Kasawo persistently tried to convince her to return to his house, but she refused, citing her difficult living conditions. Ahereza’s friend noted that on October 5th, 2023, Kasawo claimed to have secured a job for her in Iganga district and lured her into accompanying him for the job offer.
However, Ahereza’s lifeless body was discovered locked in Kasawo’s bedroom on the evening of October 6th, triggering suspicion about his involvement, as he failed to report the incident to authorities. Diana Nandawula, the Busoga East police spokesperson, confirmed Kasawo’s arrest and stated that key evidence links him to Ahereza’s death.
She explains that the autopsy report revealed signs of strangulation and bruises on Ahereza’s neck. Nandawula added that investigations are ongoing, with detectives focusing on reexamining the crime scene and gathering statements from residents to expedite the prosecution process.

Tanzania confirms outbreak of leptospirosis
Tanzania has confirmed 20 cases of leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that has claimed three lives, in the southern region of Lindi.
Health Minister Ummy Mwalimu said test results from samples of patients in Ruangwa were positive for the disease.
Last week, samples of people presenting with fever, nosebleeds, headache and body fatigue tested negative for Covid-19, Ebola and Marburg, the ministry said, calling for calm as it worked to detect it.

“I would like to inform the public that sample testing from patients has confirmed the outbreak is leptospirosis field fever or ‘homa ya Mgunda’ as it is known in Swahili,” said Ms Mwalimu on Monday.
According to the ministry, more than 20 cases have been reported, with three deaths. Two patients are currently hospitalised.
Ms Mwalimu said contact tracing was ongoing.
What is leptospirosis?
According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira.
The bacteria are transmitted from animals to humans through cuts or abrasions in the skin, nose, or eyes that come in contact with water or soil contaminated with the urine of infected animals. But, the disease cannot be transmitted from one human to another.
What are the symptoms?
In humans, it can cause a wide range of symptoms, some of which may be mistaken for other diseases.
The most common symptoms are fever, headache, chills, cough, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pain, rash, red and irritated eyes, and jaundice.
In some cases, the disease can also lead to kidney or liver failure, meningitis and respiratory distress, which can turn fatal.
Some infected persons, however, may have no symptoms at all, CDC says

Five die of Rift valley fever in Mbarara
At least five people in Mbarara District are confirmed to have died of Rift valley fever after getting into contact with infected animals.
According to the in-charge of Bwizibwera Health Centre IV, Dr Richard Atuhairwe, the disease was detected in people after subjecting them to tests.
Dr Atuhairwe said measures to contain the disease have been put in place.
The District Veterinary Officer (DVO), Dr Andrew Akashaba, said by the end of January, the disease had been reported at two farms in Rwanyamahembe Sub-county were about 50 cows were infected.
Dr Akashaba said they are sensitizing people to stop eating meat of animals that have died of unknown causes.
Rift Valley Fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic fever that is most commonly seen in domesticated animals such as cattle, sheep, goats and can also cause illness in people. It is caused by the Rift Valley Virus. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the virus was first identified in 1931 during an investigation into an epidemic among sheep on a farm in the Rift Valley of Kenya. The disease is increasingly claiming lives in Uganda. An outbreak of the fever in Kagadi District last January killed one person.

Dentists warn public against fake toothpaste
As the world commemorated Oral Health Day yesterday, dentists warned Ugandans about the use of different tubes of toothpaste, which are flooding the market.
Dr Nevis Agirembabazi, the head of the Dental Department at Mengo Hospital, said there are many kinds of toothpaste in the market, which are unhealthy.
The experts noted that any toothpaste with Fluoride is the best. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in water in varying amounts. It helps in preventing tooth decay. Toothpastes that contain 1,350 to 1,500 ppm fluoride are highly recommended.
At Mengo Hospital, Kampala, Dr Agirembabazi said it registers at least 1,800 teeth patients per month. She attributed the prevalent condition to a lack of knowledge of brushing teeth and eating sweets. Dr Agirembabazi advised the public to always seek medical attention before getting a problem.
Dr Kenneth Chapman, a dentist at Mengo Hospital, advised people to always brush before sleeping in order to prevent holes in their teeth.
“There are two main problems that affect our teeth and one is tooth holes. The holes are caused by the bacteria in the month. When we don’t clean our teeth, these bacteria will gather on the teeth,” he said, adding: “You need to use toothpaste with fluoride because it helps to make the enamel more resistant.’’

In Iganga, school stops when it rains
Parents in Iganga have called on the government to come to their rescue and improve the learning environment in most government aided schools in the district.
This is because many schools are grappling with congestion in dilapidated classrooms with pupils forced to flee to their homes whenever it rains because of leaking roofs.
Kamira SDA Primary School with over 600 pupils and Ibanda P/S has 1814 pupils.
According to the Head Teacher at Kamira SDA Primary School, Mary Goretti Auma, many of the classrooms are dilapidated with leaking roofs. Auma says this usually disrupts lessons as learners are forced out of class to find shelter elsewhere whenever it rains.
Not classrooms alone, the school is also short on pit latrines with all the 600 pupils forced to wait in line for the only three latrine stances available.
The Head Teacher adds that the school does not have a clean water source to supply the pupils when they are at school with clean drinking water.
At Ibanda Primary School in Nabitende, funding shortfalls have led to staffing and infrastructure challenges for the school that has an enrolment of 1814 pupils.
The Deputy Head Teacher at Ibanda P/S, Suzan Nabirye says the congestion, under-facilitation and lack of enough latrines has seen an increase in school drop-outs.
Nabirye says the girls are the most affected since many are afraid of sharing the few available latrines with boys whenever they go into their periods.

Is Australia headed for a recession in 2023? Possibly - as interest rates continue rising
Yet another interest rate hike has been imposed onto borrowers as the central bank tries to battle surging inflation and concerns Australia is headed for a recession in 2023 are coming to fruition.
If Australia enters a recession it could lead to mass mortgage defaults, forced sales of homes, joblessness and a further heightening of the rental affordability crisis.
But after the Reserve Bank of Australia hiked interest rates for a ninth consecutive time on Tuesday and flagged more rises are on the way, financial experts are concerned.
Basically, if GDP goes down and unemployment goes up it can equal a recession.
A "technical recession" - which may not be accompanied by a jump in unemployment - is traditionally defined as two consecutive quarters of negative growth in GDP.
If you take that definition, then the US went into a recession in 2022.
What is a recession?
A recession is a prolonged period of weak or negative growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which is the monetary value of all goods and services, is accompanied by a rise in unemployment, according to the Reserve Bank of Australia.

China's leader Xi Jinping meets Putin in Moscow days after Russian leader charged with war crimes
China's President Xi Jinping arrived Monday in Moscow for his first visit to Russia since his counterpart Vladimir Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine. Xi's visit was expected to last three days.
The Chinese leader was greeted by Putin, who commended China's growth in recent years, saying "we even envy you a little."
Putin also said that he had "carefully studied" China's proposal to end the war in Ukraine. That plan, which urges respect for the "sovereignty of all countries," does not call for a withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.
The Chinese leader's visit comes amid concerns that China may be preparing to provide lethal weapons to Russia for its war in Ukraine, which China denies. It also comes days after Putin was accused of war crimes, including orchestrating the forced removal of Ukrainian children to Russian territory, by prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the two leaders would have an informal meal together on Monday, and that broader talks were scheduled for Tuesday.

40 arrested for demolishing UPDF officer's house
Police in Mukono are holding 40 people for illegally demolishing a house belonging to Maj Mark Wanyama at Nalubaale landing site in Mpunge sub-county, Mukono District.
According to police preliminary investigations, the incident happened in a broad daylight on Wednesday, when a group of young men armed with machetes and hammers attacked the area leaving the house down and injuring one Namara Karuhunga.

Mr Yasin Kasirye, one of the residents, says he saw two boats "After disembarking, they immediately started demolishing Maj Wanyama's house and destroyed other properties around," he said, adding that they made an alarm attracting other residents and the police.
Residents say there are land wrangles on this piece of land involving two UPDF officers.

Maj Wanyama said he bought the 25 acres of land from Francis Tyaba and he has all the documents. He, however, pinned Jackson Twinamasiko also a UPDF officer for being behind the attack.
Mr Twinamasiko denied all the allegations saying he does not know anything about the attack. He accused Maj Wanyama of using his position in the army to grab land.

The Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Mr Patrick Onyango said the suspects will be arraigned in court once investigations are complete.
