Kabalega International Airport, previously known as Kabaale International Airport, is nearing completion with the runway work reported to be 98% complete!

The airport, located in Hoima district, Uganda, began its civil works on April 18, 2018, and is a significant $309 million project!

At its peak, it housed more than 5,000 people in concrete buildings, becoming one of the most densely populated places in the world. However, after the mines were closed in 1974, the island was left uninhabited. Today, it is a popular tourist destination and a symbol of the rapid boom and decline of the Japanese mining industry.

A funny fact about Hashima Island is that its appearance inspired the stage design for the James Bond movie Skyfall (2012), in which an island similar to Gunkanjima is shown. This is due to its ruins of concrete buildings, which give the impression of a ruined warship, hence its nickname "Battled Island".
