Hey hey beloved people!
An update..
We shall be performing our newest creation titled “ETAMIIRO LUKIIKO” at the Batalo East dance fest this Saturday.
Etamiiro Lukiiko" is a Luganda phrase meaning “The Drunken Committee.”
It is a story about a village once known for its wisdom and strength, a land of farmers,
builders, and dreamers. Its people were intelligent, hardworking, and proud. Yet over the
years, the systems that once nurtured them began to crumble. Poor infrastructure, insecurity,
and a corrupt administration strangled their efforts. No matter how hard they worked, the
fruits of their labor withered in the dust of a broken system.
Set in a rural village, the story unfolds around a manipulative leader ,the Chairperson
who formed a “committee” (oLukiiko) made up of loyal followers. During the meetings,
the Chairperson, with a sly smile, would order the finest wines and beers from distant
lands, drinks that no ordinary villager could afford.
The committee members were delighted. For many, it was the only time they could taste
luxury. They came eagerly, not for service, but for the wine. The Chairperson knew their
weakness; he fed their desires until their minds were clouded and their tongues heavy. In their
drunkenness, they cheered at his every word and danced to his every tune.
The meetings gradually transformed into drunken celebrations. Those who resisted the drink
were branded as traitors or enemies of peace. Some were threatened, others silenced, and a
few brave souls disappeared altogether. Those who danced the wildest and praised him the
loudest were rewarded with more wine, and empty titles. Meetings turned into brawls
between the sober and the intoxicated, truth and deceit, order and chaos.
Over time, the Lukiiko lost its purpose. What began as a council of governance turned into a
tavern of drunkards. The villagers, watching from a distance, called it Etamiiro Lukiiko(
The Drunken Committee.)
This abstract dance theatre piece draws inspiration from Uganda’s political landscape,
reflecting on the recurring cycles of corruption, manipulation, and the gradual decay of moral
wisdom in society.
The work generally serves as a metaphor for societies where power manipulates wisdom, and
pleasure blinds justice. It explores how corruption often disguises itself as generosity, how
leadership becomes mere performance, how the intoxication of authority distorts truth, and
how honesty is drowned out by the noise of celebration.
Performed with satire, humor, and irony, Etamiiro fuses Levyzmstyle’s signature drunken
sway with the traditional Bakisimba rhythms of the Baganda tribe, creating a captivating
blend of contemporary and cultural movement.
