Today we remember the sacrifice of late Archbishop Janan Luwum who was martyred for speaking truth to power and standing for the rights of the people of Uganda. We are encouraged by his example that it is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees! Archbishop Luwum had an option of living a comfortable life when his people were being oppressed, but he deemed it worthy to fight for God's people, even to the point of death!
He could have chosen to live a long life, but as Martin Luther King taught, longevity has its place! He could have chosen to keep quiet and remain neutral which is always safer, but as Archbishop Desmond Tutu cautions, "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality."
May his memory be blessed, and above all, may we be guided by this man's example, to always stand for what is true, just and fair even in the face of difficult odds. (Photo credit- Ogon.)
