Canada suspends embassy operations in South Sudan

Canada has temporarily suspended operations at its embassy in South Sudan, Global Affairs Canada confirmed.

The Canadian government did not explain the reason for the decision. Its official website has been updated to show that the embassy in Juba is no longer operating.

Consular services were transferred to Canada’s embassy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on July 13. The same mission will take over Canada’s diplomatic, political and economic relations with South Sudan this month.

Nicholas Coghlan, Canada’s first resident ambassador to South Sudan, described the suspension as a “roundabout way of saying the embassy is closing.” He said security concerns and the high cost of maintaining the mission could be behind the move.

Canada has not announced a replacement for outgoing ambassador Joanne Minns, who is moving to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The suspension comes despite Canada providing South Sudan with $91 million in bilateral aid and $23 million through multilateral programmes in 2024–25.

Veteran politician Deng Alor airlifted to Nairobi after falling ill

Veteran South Sudanese politician and liberation war hero Deng Alor Kuol has been airlifted to Nairobi, Kenya, for specialized medical treatment after reportedly falling at his home in Juba.

Deng was flown out on Wednesday afternoon aboard an air ambulance.

Details surrounding his condition have not been officially disclosed, but sources said the veteran politician was taken for further medical care following the incident.

Deng is one of South Sudan’s most experienced politicians and a prominent figure in the country’s liberation struggle. A senior commander in the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), he later served in Sudan’s Government of National Unity following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

During that period, he held the positions of Minister of Cabinet Affairs and later Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan.

Following South Sudan’s independence in 2011, Deng briefly served as the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs before taking on other senior government responsibilities.

In December 2013, he was among the 10 senior SPLM officials arrested during the political crisis that erupted in Juba. He was later released.

In July 2020, President Kiir appointed Deng as Minister of East African Community Affairs, filling the vacancy left by the late John Luk Jok, who died in June 2020.

Messages wishing Deng a swift recovery have begun pouring in from political leaders, colleagues, and members of the public.
