Agriculture has been and is still the backbone of 's economy, West Nile and Northern region has for long been faced with the challenge of only practicing subsistence farming despite the fact that government has structures to help Ugandans become better farmers such as extension workers attached to every subcounty but you can also yourself if you have an extension worker in your village or area or not and what are they doing yet they are earning salary.
A WestNile founded company Omia Agribusiness Development Group (OADG) LTD known to many as "OMIA", which took on the to change WestNile and Northern Uganda farming narrative 6 years ago by offering training, mentorship and much needed support to WestNile farmers and to date they have expanded to all the districts of WestNile and have expanded to Acholi sub region, Kiryadongo, Masindi and Kampala, they have been able to reach to 49,494 farmers of which 12.5% refugees are refugees.
Last year they started the WestNile Agribusiness and renewable energy expo the first ever agricultural expo in WestNile, probably even Northern region, this expo provides a platform for farmers to learn different technologies from different actors in the Agribusiness and Renewable Energy Space.
This is through exhibitions by agribusiness and energy companies, direct trainings by experts and through networking
The 2nd edition of the WestNile Agribusiness and renewable energy expo is coming up on February starting on the 6th to 8th, February 2025 at OPM grounds and it's free of charge.
