While the terms phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, and phonics are often used interchangeably, they represent distinct, though related skills in early literacy development.

Let's clarify the differences between them.

Phonological Awareness: This is an umbrella term encompassing the ability to recognize and manipulate sounds at different levels within words, including syllables, onsets and rimes, and phonemes.
It includes working with larger sound units beyond just phonemes.

Phonemic awareness: This specific subset of phonological awareness focuses on the smallest units of sound: phonemes. It involves hearing, identifying, and manipulating individual phonemes within words.

Phonics: This is understanding the relationship between letters (graphemes) and the sounds they represent (phonemes). It involves applying this knowledge to both reading and spelling (writing).
