Burkina Faso’s parliament has voted to dissolve the country’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), calling it an unnecessary financial burden.

The responsibility for organizing future elections will now fall under the Ministry of Territorial Administration, which manages national governance and local affairs.

President Ibrahim Traoré justified the move, accusing the commission of being a conduit for “foreign interference.” The decision marks another step in the government’s ongoing effort to distance the West African nation from external influence.

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) presidential candidate Nathan Nandala Mafabi has blamed the persistent poverty in Northern Uganda on the government’s failure to compensate victims of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency.

Addressing a rally in Koch Goma Town Council, Nwoya District, Mafabi said thousands of families who lost relatives and property during the two-decade-long conflict have been neglected, leaving the region trapped in poverty and economic stagnation.

“If government had compensated the victims of war and those who lost their loved ones, Northern Uganda would not be suffering from such deep poverty today,” Mafabi told supporters.

Odur Challenges Mpuuga’s Legitimacy on Parliamentary Commission

The Erute South Member of Parliament, Jonathan Odur, has questioned the legitimacy of Mathias Mpuuga as the designated Opposition Commissioner on the Parliamentary Commission, following his defection from the National Unity Platform (NUP) to the newly formed Democratic Front (DF).

Odur raised the matter during the October 29, 2025 plenary sitting, arguing that Mpuuga’s shift to another party automatically creates a vacancy on the Commission, as stipulated under the Administration of Parliament Act.
“The law is clear that once a member designated from the Opposition changes political party, a vacancy automatically occurs,” Odur stated, adding that the Opposition currently has no clear representation on the Commission since the Leader of Opposition (LOP), Joel Ssenyonyi, has reportedly been barred from attending its meetings.

However, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa dismissed claims that Ssenyonyi was being locked out, insisting that he remains a member of the Commission and attends when available.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, Ben Kumumanya, has directed all local governments to include a clear zero-tolerance corruption disclaimer in their job advertisements as part of efforts to promote transparency and integrity in public service recruitment.

Speaking during a meeting of Human Resource Officers and Secretaries to District and City Service Commissions at Imperial Royale Hotel, Kampala, Mr. Kumumanya applauded Masaka District for setting a good example by including a disclaimer in its job announcements clearly stating that government jobs are not for sale and that soliciting or offering bribes is a criminal offence.

He instructed all local governments to adopt the same practice in upcoming recruitment exercises, emphasizing that it is a step toward restoring public confidence in the fairness and professionalism of the hiring process.

“Every public officer serves in trust for the people of Uganda. We must therefore reject corruption and uphold the highest standards of integrity,” Mr. Kumumanya said.

Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) President Jimmy Akena has urged Ugandans to focus on unity and national reconstruction following a surprise visit by National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, to his ancestral home in Akokoro, Apac District, where he laid a wreath on the grave of former President Dr. Apollo Milton Obote.

The visit, which drew wide public attention and online debate, came as Kyagulanyi traversed the Lango sub-region for his presidential campaign trail. Akena said while the gesture was significant, it had also sparked unnecessary speculation that needed to be addressed calmly and maturely.

“I’ve seen many comments on social media and elsewhere,” Akena said at a press briefing held Thursday at the UPC headquarters in Kampala. “Leadership should not be about echoing emotion but about steadying the nation. The test of leadership is not how loudly we respond but how faithfully we continue to serve.”
