Six months already? It hardly feels real.

It feels like we only just began this journey, yet here we are, looking back with hearts full of gratitude and hope.

Every step we've taken over the past six months has been made possible by the incredible people who believe in our mission of nurturing professionals in media. Thank you for walking this journey with us.

Our five days in Gulu was well spent mostly engaging and answering questions and speaking to pertinent issues that were related but in most cases not connected to mobile storytelling. Career and personal branding took centre stage in most conversations with community members, radio personalities and students from the EAIMS. It was a Sunday, and we literally talked till the "cows came home."

That was on May 10, 2025. The students looking forward to joining the profession are interested in knowing more about the realities of the media environment and work generally.

Well, the rhetorical questions were many.

Having skills is important, but equally important is understanding where and how those skills can be applied to avoid redundancy, exploitation, or underemployment.

As AfriMedia Training Institute, we continue to engage journalism and communication students on the realities of today's media environment and how they can leverage digital transformation skills to position themselves in a media industry that is still finding its footing in the digital space.

We strongly believe that every student pursuing journalism or communication deserves practical, hands-on experiences that increase their chances of accessing meaningful employment after graduation. Equally important is the student's commitment and the support systems around them that help them develop a clear vision for their future.

This brings us to a question: Who is guiding the student in your life as they eagerly await graduation and entry into an increasingly competitive job market?

The reality is that the media industry does not have enough opportunities to absorb all graduates. Take an institution like Makerere University, for example. The University produces between 85 and 150 undergraduate students and about 30 masters students per year according to their data, that's a lot for newsrooms that need about five to ten employees to function. Even the larger media houses, such as Nation Media Group and Next Media, recruit a limited number of graduates annually, sometimes through their training and internship programmes, depending on organisational needs.

So where does that leave the many graduates who enter the job market each year?

The answer begins with asking deeper questions while still in school. If you are a student, parent, guardian, or sponsor, consider this:

Where is the passion?

What skills are being developed beyond lecture notes and examinations?

How practical are those skills?

Can they be applied in real-world situations?

And most importantly, what challenge in the community can those skills help solve?

These are the conversations that matter if we are to prepare young people not only for employment, but also for impact.

The choice of the outdoor and open setting at TAKS Centre proved effective in creating an environment that encouraged free expression, connection, and networking for the journalists present. By 7:30pm, it was clear that a significant impact had been achieved, despite operating with minimal resources.
