Life on earth is indeed brief, a "v***r that appears for a little while and then vanishes" (James 4:14).
My great grandfather and your great-grandfather, who has rested for a century now, is a powerful reminder of how fleeting our time here is. He, like so many others, lived only a fraction of the years that have since passed in his absence, reminding us that everything in this life is temporary. We work hard, seeking things that comfort and satisfy our bodies—money, homes, possessions, and entertainment. Yet, when our last breath leaves us, none of these things can be taken along.
In Matthew 6:19-20, Jesus urges, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” The true treasure isn’t in what brings comfort to our bodies but in what nourishes our spirits. When we lose oxygen, we lose our earthly life, but where will our spirit go? Jesus tells us to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33) because only that pursuit leads to eternal life.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, so many faced life’s fragility when oxygen—something we take for granted daily—suddenly became scarce. We learned how much we depend on the breath God freely provides. Genesis 2:7 reminds us that God breathed into man the “breath of life,” making us living souls. Without Him, we are nothing; our lives are like dust. We must honor Him, the Giver of life, by living in a way that shows respect, gratitude, and reverence.
Salvation is freely offered by Jesus, who died so we might live forever with Him. If you’ve been focused only on earthly things, Jesus is calling you today to turn your heart toward Him. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Instead of clinging to temporary comforts, let us cling to Christ, our Savior, and invest in our eternal home. Let us live in a way that will not only honor the breath God gives but lead us to be with Him eternally in His kingdom.
If you haven’t accepted Him as Lord, ask Him now to fill you with His Spirit, to cleanse you from sin, and to give you a new life focused on eternity with Him. Time here is short; eternity is forever.
