The rate of child marriages in Mt.Elgon sub region is rising rapidly.

Many girls between the age 12 and 15 have been married off due to the biting impact of Covid 19 .

Agnes Nambozo 15 , a teenage mother of two told Eastern News Network -ENN that her dreams of returning to school and settling down in future failed in 2020 when the 1st lock down was instituted when she conceived against her will.

‘ I was sure my mother and relatives would support my return to school and normal life, however this failed when I got pregnant for the second time, my mother and relatives demanded that I get married to him as they could no longer support me’

She is struggling to fend for her family amid the huge responsibility placed on her shoulder of providing for her children with an absentee father who is barely concerned about them.

Like Nambozo, many teenage mothers in Mt. Elgon sub region have been married off as a result of covid 19.

Research indicates that 34% of girls are married before their 18th birthday every year in Uganda, and 1 in 10 is married before turning 15.

Child rights organisations warn that the rate of child marriage in the country is rising due to school closures, food insecurity, and economic uncertainty triggered by COVID-19.

Anita Nkabugo, a child rights activist in Mbale City says lower income households face increased pressure on food and resources, and marrying off their daughters will help relieve them as parents from the burden of providing for their children’s daily needs.

For example, they may see marrying their daughters as an option to both relieve that pressure and give them a better life.
