Why Can't Children Read?

It meant so much to us when Dr. Safina Mutumba became the first person from the Ministry to share our book as her WhatsApp profile picture. Her support is deeply appreciated.

Today, we’re honored to present We Can’t Wait to Learn a session chaired by the Ministry of Education and Sports Uganda at Golden Tulip Hotel, Kampala, on Wednesday, 30th July 2025.

I personally repeated three times at the primary level simply because I couldn’t read a single word by Primary Five. Looking back, I believe God allowed that journey for a divine purpose one that led to the development of the RICA approach, a contextualized, play-based, multi-sensory reading method designed to help every child learn to read, and every teacher learn how to teach reading across all classes and subjects. So over 13000 teachers in Uganda, Kenya, and South Sudan.

RICA Syllables Rhyme
The easiest way to overcome the illiteracy challenge we face in Africa is by teaching reading the African way. With the RICA approach under TIN our main objective is to simplify reading and show Africans it's possible to teach reading in the African context using African syllables.
Out of experience it's extremely simple to teach reading and other learning areas based on what children understand compared to what they just see on TV from a far.
