• The official annual pardoning of a turkey by the President of the United States has been a tradition since 1947 when President Harry S. Truman received a live turkey as a gift and spared it from being eaten.
• The oldest Thanksgiving parade in the United States is the Dunkin' Donuts Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia, which began in 1920.
• The Plymouth Pilgrims, who celebrated the first Thanksgiving, didn't have forks. They ate with spoons, knives, and their fingers!
• The iconic Thanksgiving song "Jingle Bells" was originally written for Thanksgiving, not Christmas. It was composed by James Lord Pierpont in 1850 and titled "One Horse Open Sleigh.”
• The first Thanksgiving football game between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears took place in 1934 and has since become a beloved tradition.
• In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October and has a different historical origin than the American Thanksgiving.
