The vision of an annual “west coast” Forum dates back to the summer of 2000. We had ideas to share and saw the role of a conference to help us expand a localized southern California thinking network into something much larger – an international thinking network. In envisioning the Forum, we borrowed ideas from conferences we had attended and integrated them into the design of our event. For example, we took the concept of a forum from the annual “Deming” conference in Cincinnati, the Ohio Quality and Productivity Forum, also known as OQPF. Similarly, we borrowed the idea of a weekend event from the annual W. Edwards Deming Institute (WEDI) conference. We also borrowed the idea of a low-cost event from the WEDI conference, and settled in on $250 as the registration fee for our first Forum in 2002. To this Weekend Conference activity, we added two days (Thursday and Friday) of Pre-Conference seminars and workshops and defined the entire 4-day event, Pre-Conference plus conference, as our annual Forum. The Weekend Conference activities begin at 4pm on a Friday and end at noon on the following Sunday. - See more at: https://www.leveragenetworks.com/events/15th-annual-in2-inthinking-network-forum#sthash.o1tqUeLG.dpuf

Given the media attention to the terrorist activities in the Middle East, I suspect you may share my growing uneasiness about the situation, particularly with regard to ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and in Syria). So what might systems thinkers make of the situation as it has been developing? Is there any wisdom we can offer? In a recent article in The New Systems Thinker, we explored this topic.

Leverage Points: Learning from Video Games of Dubious Merit http://bit.ly/1KnMzCN

The other day, I was faced with my 12 year old son’s excitement about a video game. Once again, he wanted me to learn how to play it. And once again, I questioned my parental culpability for letting my son spend far too much time on video games (yes, I am one of those moms who believes that which we forbid becomes more desirable). Was preparation for some future battle, a la Ender’s Game, sufficient to justify my lax parenting?
