At the end of the 19th century, “The Lady with the Lamp,” or as she is more widely known, Florence Nightingale, founded modern nursing. Thanks to her strict use of handwashing and hygiene practices while caring for wounded soldiers in the Crimean War, Nightingale and her helpers reduced the death rate from 42% to 2%.

Today, we recognize the important role nurses play in our lives by celebrating National Nurses Day!

Today is Census Day! The 2020 census is more than a population count - it's an opportunity to shape the future of your community.

Historically, Native households and Native communities have been undercounted. Because the census is essential to government operations and the distribution of funding, this historical undercounting of First Americans is problematic.

By participating, we speak for the generations of Native people who preceded us and for those yet to come. The funding that results from our participation will help us continue to build a brighter future for our people. Help us make every Native American count in 2020.

If you haven’t already, complete the 2020 Census today at 2020census.gov. For information about the census as it relates to Chickasaw citizens and the Chickasaw Nation, go to Chickasaw.net/Census.

This week in #WeatherWednesday, we’re looking at the difference between thunderstorm watches and warnings.

A severe weather thunderstorm watch means be prepared: stay informed and be ready to act, because severe thunderstorms are possible. A severe thunderstorm warning means take action! When this warning is issued, you should take shelter in a strong building, because severe weather is occurring or will occur shortly.

In celebration of National Women’s History Month, we recognize the achievements of Kate Smith, also known as “The First Lady of Radio.” She was the first woman to have her own radio show. You may know her as the woman in the 1930s and 1940s who sang “God Bless America” over the airwaves. Smith hosted the “Kate Smith Hour” from 1937 to 1945. She continued on the Mutual Broadcasting System, CBS, ABC, and NBC doing both music and talk shows on radio until 1960.

Tonight at bedtime many people will set their clocks forward one hour to mark the beginning of daylight saving time early Sunday!

Fun Fact: In 1916, Germany became the first country in the world to use daylight saving time on a national level. However, the town of Thunder Bay in Ontario, Canada, implemented it as far back as 1908.

MEET THE TEAM: For nearly 10 years, Tishia Agee has been a fun and friendly voice on KCNP Chickasaw Community Radio!

Since 2010, Tishia has served as radio production coordinator, reporter and on-air talent for KCNP, but her radio career began in Ada almost 30 years ago. Along the way, she worked at KTCS in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and 14 years at KXY in Oklahoma City before returning to the Chickasaw Nation.

Tishia believes her decade of work with the tribe has been her most fulfilling and diverse job. Highlights include attending Chickasaw Nation citizen gatherings in Tulsa, Dallas and Portland, Oregon, acting as an extra in the feature film "Te Ata" and providing the voice of Eleanor Roosevelt in the documentary "Te Ata: Bearer of the Morning.”

When she is not on air, Tishia is an emcee and singer at a variety of events including the Rodeo Opry in Oklahoma City, the annual meeting of People’s Electric Cooperative (PEC Day!) in Ada and at the historic McSwain Theatre. Tishia says she is proud to work for the Chickasaw Nation and fortunate to do work that she loves in her hometown.

#DYK The Chickasaw Nation operates several commercial radio stations in addition to the non-commercial KCNP Chickasaw Community Radio?

Here is some information about the Chickasaw Nation’s history in radio from Governor Bill Anoatubby.

Radio stations play a major role in rural America by helping keep people entertained, informed and safe. As part of our effort to serve listeners who live and work in all parts of the Chickasaw Nation and beyond, the Chickasaw Nation operates six commercial and three non-commercial radio stations.

Our work in radio began in 1996 with the acquisition of KADA-AM and Cool 99.3 FM. Fifteen years ago today, Jan. 27, 2005, we acquired our third station, 100.1 KYKC. In 2008, our stable of commercial radio stations grew with the addition of KTLS (106.5 Boss FM) and KXFC (105.5 The X-Factor). Two years ago this month, our newest commercial station, Pirate Radio 102.3fm, signed onto the airwaves.

In 2009, KCNP Chickasaw Community Radio was established on 89.5 FM in Ada to serve the community with public affairs information, weather coverage, Native American news and programming as well as the area’s most diverse mix of music. In January 2016, KCNP added a second tower near Dickson to serve Carter, Love, Marshall and much of Johnston counties on 89.3 FM.

Recently, KCNP Chickasaw Community Radio added a third transmitter in the center of Johnston County that provides a strong signal in our historic capital city of Tishomingo and allows us to further collaborate with local partners like Johnston County Emergency Management and other first responders by relaying important safety information to the public.

To learn about KCNP radio and its programming or listen to archived interviews, visit KCNP.org. For information about SCORE Broadcasting and our network of commercial radio stations, visit Chickasaw.net.
