The Funny History of Pizza

Long, long ago, before food delivery apps, before restaurants had menus, and before anyone could say, *โ€œBro, whereโ€™s my pizza?โ€*โ€ฆ

People were already eating something that looked suspiciously like pizza.

Thousands of years ago, ancient people discovered a revolutionary idea:

**โ€œPut food on bread.โ€**

And honestlyโ€ฆ humanity never looked back.

Flatbreads were eaten by different ancient civilizations around the Mediterranean and Middle East. They were cheap, simple, and easy to carry.

But then came the Italians.

And the Italians looked at a piece of flatbread and basically said:

**โ€œThis is goodโ€ฆ but it needs cheese.โ€**

So they added toppings.

Tomatoes eventually became a major part of the story too. Interestingly, Europeans initially thought tomatoes were suspicious and even feared they might be poisonous.

Imagine looking at a tomato and thinking:

**โ€œHmmโ€ฆ beautiful red fruit. Definitely could kill me.โ€**

Meanwhile, hundreds of years later:

**โ€œExtra tomato sauce, please.โ€**

Pizza as we know it became especially associated with Naples, Italy.

Poor workers needed cheap, filling food they could eat quickly. So pizza was perfect.

Bread? โœ…
Tomato? โœ…
Cheese? โœ…
Hungry worker? โœ…

But then something unexpected happened.

A pizza became famous enough to be served to royalty.

Legend says that in 1889, pizza maker Raffaele Esposito created a pizza featuring tomatoes, mozzarella, and basilโ€”the colors of the Italian flagโ€”for Queen Margherita.

And people say this pizza was named **Margherita** after her.

Imagine being a pizza maker and hearing:

**โ€œThe Queen wants your pizza.โ€**

You'd probably stop making pizza for five seconds and think:

**โ€œPlease don't burn it.โ€**

Eventually, Italian immigrants brought pizza to other countries, especially the United States.

And Americans looked at pizza and said:

Then they made it bigger.

At some point, pizza stopped being a simple meal and became a full-blown food empire.

Today, pizza comes in almost every form imaginable.

And the mysterious pizza that has so many toppings that you can no longer see the bread.
