Martial arts isn’t just about fighting. It’s about meeting yourself again and again. Actor and martial artist Bob reflects on how jiu-jitsu has shaped him as an individual, as an actor, and as a man.

💡 “The real fight is against the person in the mirror.”

In this Coffee Time with Carlos Machado episode, Bob shares:

Why jiu-jitsu is the ultimate teacher of humility

Lessons from Taekwondo and transitioning to BJJ

How martial arts helps him de-escalate conflict, on and off the mat

The Spider-Man principle: With great power comes great responsibility

Why the toughest opponent is always yourself

At 15 years old, Kenny Kim left home. By 17, he was in jail.

He admits he was running with the wrong crowd, headed toward a dark path. But there was one thing that kept pulling him back in line — martial arts.

In this Coffee Time with Carlos conversation, Kenny recalls how his friends once robbed a gas station and were sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was with them earlier that night, but he chose to go home. Why? Because he had to train the next day.

That decision changed his entire life.

Carlos Machado connects the moment to something his late uncle, Carlos Gracie Sr., once said: “If it was not for Jiu-Jitsu, I would either be in jail or killed.”

Martial arts can save lives. Sometimes in small ways. Sometimes in ways that literally change the course of a lifetime.

Should Jiu-Jitsu be in the Olympics?

In this Coffee Time with Carlos clip, Kenny Kim and Master Carlos Machado share why they are not so sure.

Kenny points to what happened with Taekwondo. In the past, fighters like Chuck Norris and Joe Rogan came out of Taekwondo with devastating kicks, knockout power, and artistry. But after the sport was absorbed into the Olympic system, the rules changed. Suddenly, athletes were bouncing on one leg, scoring points in ways that looked nothing like the art it once was.

He fears the same will happen with Jiu-Jitsu. It is already happening with IBJJF competition, stalling, gaming the clock, playing for advantages, avoiding submissions. The rule set dictates the training, and the art is diminished.

Carlos agrees. He has seen world class black belts coast through nine minutes of a match, score one advantage at the end, and then stall. It might be legal, but it is not the essence of Jiu-Jitsu.

Jiu-Jitsu was built on self-defense and submission. What happens when the rule sets erase that?

“My entire life was a challenge.”

That is how Kenny Kim describes his journey in this Coffee Time with Carlos conversation.

Growing up with immigrant parents who worked multiple jobs, money was tight. By 14, Kenny was working janitorial shifts, cleaning buildings after school while still making time to train. When he opened his first academy, he thought it would be the dream. Instead, he slept in his school for six months. No car. No money. Some nights he ate nothing more than a one dollar bowl of rice, split between lunch and dinner.

There were nights he sat on the mat in the dark, shivering in winter because he could not pay the heating bill, crying quietly, but too stubborn to quit. He had no backup plan. It was either succeed or fail. No middle ground.

What carried him through was the knowledge that martial arts was the only thing he had. It was his gift. It was his shot. Jiu-Jitsu, in particular, molded him into the man he is today — more secure, more open, a better coach, a better friend, a better human being.

The man people see now — upbeat, smiling, confident — is the product of scars, sleepless nights, and an unshakable decision to keep going when quitting seemed easier.

Kenny Kim’s martial arts journey started when he was just three years old.

As the child of immigrant parents working multiple jobs, there were no soccer practices or little league games. His father took him straight to a Taekwondo school. That became his identity. Through childhood and teenage years in Austell, Georgia, it was the one place he belonged.

It was also his lifeline. As the only non white kid in his school, Kenny was bullied daily, even by teachers. But martial arts gave him confidence. It gave him a way to fight back, both physically and emotionally.

At 20 years old, he stepped into his first Jiu Jitsu academy. He thought his years of training would protect him. Instead, a 45 year old woman armbarred him three times, and two brothers half his size choked him until he tapped. It was humbling. It was eye opening. And it changed his life.

This is the heart of martial arts, resilience, identity, and the courage to face yourself.
