One of Northeast Ohio’s hardest working musicians, Bobby Selvaggio plays a central role in keeping the spirit of jazz alive throughout the region. In addition to his role as Director of Jazz Studies at Kent State University and his role leading artist and talent management and scheduling at multiple venues, Bobby constantly strives to reinvent himself, assembling groups with different styles or perspectives in mind.
In this performance, his group 11 features chamber jazz compositions for a large ensemble. While that may seem like a bit of a juxtaposition, you’ll have to trust me, it works well. From March 12,2022 it’s Bobby Selvaggio’s 11 – Live at the Bop Stop.
Live at the Bop Stop is made possible by the Music Settlement – serving Northeast Ohio by offering music instruction – music therapy and early childhood education since 1912. The Music Settlement’s mission is to welcome all to our music and arts community to learn – create – inspire – and heal.

This program is recorded at the Robert Conrad Studios at the Bop Stop in Cleveland, Ohio and the studios of KUNV in Las Vegas, Nevada. Additional production at the Bop Stop is provided by Graham Rosen. Editing for WOBC,WNPA and the Public Radio Exchange is provided by Dr. Pete Naegele - and for our podcast and other radio affiliates by Shawn Gilbert at Gilazar Media.

The executive producer is Daniel Peck – with additional consulting production by Bryan Kennard and Gabe Pollack.

Birth got their start here in Cleveland in 1999, but after many years of performing, recording, and developing their sound into an expansive musical language that was well received here in Northeast Ohio the band went on a long hiatus.
When they reunited a few years ago, they found their music has evolved from youthful, unrestrained, often "sensationalized" displays of prodigious outbursts on their instruments, to a hybrid of powerful, yet highly sensitive improvisation and composition.
A favorite of Cleveland jazz writer and folk icon Harvey Pekar, their music lead Harvey to proclaim that birth was "So good that it's scary."
You be the judge. Featuring Jeremy Bleich on bass, Joe Tomino on drums and Joshua Smith on Saxophones, and from a June 12th, 2022 performance – it’s Birth – Live at the Bop Stop.

Through an eclectic assemblage of touring collaborators and kinfolk, “The Black Whole” seamlessly reconnects jazz to its freer ancestral roots, while consciously and simultaneously working to uproot it through diverse sonic exchanges, instrumental interplay, and contemporary juxtapositions.
Pianist and composer Walter Kemp III set out to explore this concept, pushing the boundaries of sound, and bringing with it a sense of cosmic freewheeling along with the other members of the quintet.
Featuring Walter Kemp III on piano, Grammy Award winner Scott Tixier on violin, Brent Birckhead on wind instruments, Rishon Odel on bass and Allan Mednard on drums, from a June 23rd, 2022 performance, it’s Black Whole – Live at the Bop Stop.
