The Warden works great for smoothing out all of those tappy riffs while adding body and sparkle to your tone. Combined with a subtle setting on the Ghost Echo with the attack backed off, you are left with a beautiful backdrop of modulated verb that offers incredible clarity to all those taps.

Shinichi Ito gets wavy with the Aqueduct, Night Wire, and Avalanche Run!
The Aqueduct vintage-inspired vibrato gives some wonderful pitch wobble on the sine wave setting with a fast rate. Night Wire is a versatile harmonic tremolo; here the rate and frequency toggles are set to manual, adding a nice pulsing tremolo. The Avalanche Run stereo delay & reverb adds a touch of plate style reverb and then fades out on a hypnotic reverse delay.
If you buy an Aqueduct or Night Wire by the end of September, you'll get a FREE limited edition EQD shirt too. Full details and rebate form here:

To give you a taste of the good times and great music to be experienced, here's a one-song session from Cleveland trio Language performing at EarthQuaker Day's Eve at Musica in downtown Akron on Friday, Aug. 5.

Big Pop EarthQuaker Sessions "The Depths"
It's almost our big day! The Revenge Of EarthQuaker Day is happening on Saturday, Aug. 6th, at EQD headquarters in downtown Akron. So, to whet your appetite for the good food, fun, friendly folks, and great music, here's a tune from Akron's own Big Pop. The self-described "rock/pop conglomerate from Earth" brings us a change of pace with a 50's-style-rock n' roll-infused power ballad called "The Depths," and yes, it was named for the EQD optical vibe pedal, pretty cool, eh? Lead singer and guitarist Jeri Sapronetti gets all vulnerable, detailing her heartbreak and romantic disappointment over the swaying waltz-time groove laid down by the quintet. There's even a brief mid-song monologue!
Big Pop is just one of six kick-ass bands performing throughout The Revenge of EarthQuaker Day. So load up the car with all your favorite pedal, music, and party people, and come hang out with Big Pop, your dedicated EQD staff, and the community on this big, family-friendly day of fun, food, and music! Shannon and the Clams EarthQuaker Sessions
Welcome to the latest edition of EarthQuaker Sessions featuring Shannon and the Clams. Touring behind their critically acclaimed 2021 album Year of the Spider, the Oakland-bred quartet of Shannon Shaw (vocals, bass), Cody Blanchard (vocals, guitar), Chris Icasiano (drums, vocals), and Will Sprott (vocals, keyboards) stopped by the EQD studio two drop a couple of tunes from the album. Cody, sporting a pedalboard that includes EQD's Hummingbird, Eruptor, Grand Orbiter, Terminal, and a Plumes, takes the lead vocals on the ominous, simmering “Snakes Crawl." Keyboardist Will adds extra spooky touches by using the Space Spiral on his Moog Grandmother synth.
Next, Shannon and Cody beautifully blend their voices together for the plaintive harmonies fueling the old-school 50's style waltz-time torch ballad, “I Need You Bad,” with some added harmonies from groove keeper Chris.
Shannon and the Clams will be touring Australia in July and will perform at Desert Days in Lake Parris, CA, in September. To hear more, check out Year of the Spider, on the band's bandcamp page: https://shannonandtheclams.bandcamp.com/music

Molly Miller plays Special Cranker Overdrive pedal with a P90 Les Paul
It’s time for another expert look at the all-new Special Cranker overdrive! This one features Molly Miller, guitarist-for-hire and leader of her band, the Molly Miller Trio. Molly takes the simple route and plugs her beautiful Les Paul equipped with some crisp P90s right into the Special Cranker. Doctor Miller (yes, she has a Doctorate in Musical Arts from the University of Southern California, and she’s the chair of the Guitar Department at Los Angeles College of Music!) then shows how the medium-gain drive maintains the clarity of single notes and chords at even the lowest gain setting. As a physically and musically expressive and dynamic player, Molly appreciates the responsiveness of the Special Cranker and how interactive it feels with her hands as she’s playing. Check out the video and hear more directly from the good Doctor and take her advice and check out the new Special Cranker, an overdrive you can trust!

Special Cranker Designer Notes
If you're a dedicated fan of our EarthQuaking Devices (we love ya!), you may wonder what the difference is between the old, discontinued Speaker Cranker and the brand new Special Cranker overdrive? Well, grab a snack, and open your eyes and ears as EQD founder and lead designer Jamie Stillman talks about the inspiration behind the new deluxe and more versatile version of this old EQD favorite.
Enjoy as Jamie highlights the crucial differences between the two pedals, including the new Level and Tone controls and the clipping diode switch that gives you two drives in one while still retaining the inherent sonic awesomeness of your chosen amp. We've even got a couple of rare guest testimonials from veteran EQD employees and musicians Mike Tolan and Jeff France. Hi guys!
If you're looking for more nuts and bolts factoids, turn up your devices and listen as Jamie demos the Special Cranker with a variety of pickups and guitars to show how the pedal augments the natural characteristics of these beloved instruments and their traditional pickup configurations.
So sit back and let Jamie tell you why this all-discrete analog distortion enhancement device is an overdrive you can trust.

Mass of the Fermenting Dregs EarthQuaker Sessions - "SHE IS INSIDE, HE IS OUTSIDE"
Here's an EQD Session imported from our Japanese site featuring the post-hardcore and gloriously noisy and rocking trio Mass of the Fermenting Dregs.
On the day of the session, the members of Mass of the Fermenting Dregs braved heavy downpours that jammed traffic throughout Tokyo. But it only took a few takes to capture the live energy of the trio of Natsuko Miyamoto (vocals, bass), Naoya Ogura (guitar, backing vocals), and Isao Yoshino (drums, backing vocal).
Guitarist Ogura's pedalboard features the Dispatch Master, Hoof Reaper, Plumes, and Spatial Delivery. Playing through his 1970's large-head Stratocaster's middle pickup, the Plumes maintains the song's crunchiness while the Hoof Reaper adds depth to the chaotic parts. For some added flavor, Ogura judiciously uses the Spatial Delivery's sample and hold mode, and the contrast between that effect and the fuzz and overdrive makes those parts really pop and grab your ears.
Bassist and founding member Miyamoto uses the EQD Acapulco Gold to enhance the overdriven bottom end of the two songs, "She Is Inside, He Is Outside" and the kinetic instrumental "Bears." The Acapulco Gold mixed with her road-worn Fender jazz bass pushes the rhythm and retains a nice sponginess as she plays single notes and chords.
Finally, Mass of the Fermenting Dregs' reputation as high-energy performers is humorously punctuated after the final note ends as Yoshino playfully collapses on the Zildjian A series hi-hat, drawing chuckles from his band mates.

Boris "Loveless" EarthQuaker Sessions | EarthQuaker Devices
Hello EarthQuakers,
Welcome to the new "EarthQuaker Sessions" YouTube Channel. Here you'll find all your favorite EQD Sessions and perhaps a few you may have missed. Enjoy this special treat from our awesome friends and collaborators in Boris, who are celebrating their 30th Anniversary in 2022!
"Loveless" is from the trio's heavy-as-heck 2020 album "NO." For fans of the Japanese heavy experimental legends, this session should give you the full Boris injection you need to get through your day. There's headbang-inducing speedy punk-metal riffage and a satisfying doom crawl. Drummer Atsuo commands the microphone with his clean(ish) vocals, while double guitar/bass master Takeshi provides the very unclean vocals and big bottom end while guest drummer Muchio provides the rhythmic propusion. And, of course, six-string sorceress Wata wields her Black LP custom, fueled by her Hizumitas Fuzz Sustainar flinging riffs and leads around the room to ensure it's all frickin' epic. This EQD session is the seven-minute sonic summation of the trio's credo: BorisHeavyRocks.

Emily Retsas (Kim Gordon/Phoebe Bridgers) Plays the Special Cranker | EarthQuaker Devices
Bassist Emily Retsas, whom you may have caught providing basslines for Phoebe Bridgers, or Boygenius, or Kim Gordon and/or Better Oblivion Community Center, takes a few moments from her busy gig and recording schedule to bless us with her first impressions of the all-new EQD Special Cranker Overdrive. With help from Hayley Brownwell, current drummer for Olivia Rodrigo, Emily gives us a quick demo of how well the Special Cranker works with the bass. She offers up some hard-rockin' fuzz bass and some melodic chord work that shows the "extra grittiness" of the Special Cranker and pairs it with the "dreaminess" of the Sea Machine Super Chorus, and it all grooves, man. So check out Emily and Hayley, and then get yourself a Special Cranker, an overdrive you can trust!

Special Cranker Video Manual
Hello EarthQuakers,
We are back with a deep dive into our latest pedal, the Special Cranker, an all-discrete analog distortion enhancement device.
Some pedal lovers out there may wonder why anyone would need a manual for an overdrive. "Aren't all overdrives essentially "Turn it up to make sound louder!"
Well, Special Cranker isn't just any old overdrive. Instead, it's a versatile stompbox that works to boost and enhance your instrument's signal with a bit of grit while not obliterating your amp's natural tone.
A unique feature is the diode selector switch allowing you to choose between the softer and rounder germanium or the brighter and edgier silicon tone. In either mode, you'll get an enhanced version of your signature tone that you can control. The Special Cranker is a medium-gain drive designed not to dominate your sound. Instead, it acts as a sonic tool in your pedal arsenal, offering more options for tone sculpting. Also, it can flat-out rock.
So, please nod your head approvingly as we walk you through a few ways you can use the Special Cranker to augment and refine your already killer tone on any instrument.

Special Cranker First Impression: Sarah Lipstate (Noveller) | EarthQuaker Devices
Here at EarthQuaker Devices we strongly believe that you (yes, you!) need an overdrive you can trust. Conveniently, we have a new overdrive for you to place your trust, The Special Cranker! And, to give you a taste of this trustworthy device, we have enlisted Sarah Lipstate a.k.a Noveller, the talented and nattily dressed artist and guitar conjurer for Iggy Pop and The Free Band to wow you with her inventive uses of the Special Cranker.
Check it out and be ready to be inspired as Sarah uses her Boomerang III “phrase sampler” to build a hazy, layered tune to which she strategically applies some Special Cranker grit. If that weren’t enough coolness, Sarah grabs a bow and creats a fuzzed-out melody! Ultra-rare submission: Hoof #001
Hey EarthQuaker friends!
It’s time for another episode of This Old Bench. We’re looking back into time to bask in the warm glow of nostalgia and look at some of the early and rare pedals upon which EarthQuaker Devices was built. For episode 4, our congenial host Justin looks at one of the original versions of The Hoof, one of EQD’s most popular pedals. This pedal is so old the circuit board was hand-etched, populated, and wired by founder, president Jamie Stillman and was among the first Hoof’s ever sold commercially.
Also, for this episode, Justin is joined in the basement by a surprise guest; Jamie’ effin’ Stillman! The pair of gray-bearded guitarists marvel at this oldest-school Hoof’s surprisingly high gain as Jamie shreds jams on a Jazzmaster.
Jamie also recalls that the pedal was made “before anybody joined the team. It was just me rotting away by myself, smoking cigarettes in my basement.”
Jamie also notes that the pedal may be one of only “five or six” produced without the familiar cloven hoof graphic, only text. Finally, for the hardcore pedal nerds, he also reveals a secret about the origins of the Hoof circuit.
So please enjoy this wistful reminiscence and look at an original Hoof, a.k.a. “The pedal that kind of started the whole company.”

Arianna Powell Special Cranker First Impression
Hey EarthQuakers, are you wondering what all the fuss (not fuzz) is about the new EQD Special Cranker? Well, hit play on the above video and let Arianna Powell, guitarist for singer Olivia Rodrigo and solo artist school you on why she likes our new trustworthy overdrive. Arianna knows a lot of cool chords, and as always, her tasteful playing highlights the Special Cranker’s ability to maintain note and chord clarity at low or medium gain settings. Then, using an Avalanche Run for a bit of depth, Arianna shows the benefits of both the silicon and geranium modes and touts the warmth and genuine “amp break-up” sound you can get from this pedal. So, absorb the excellent playing and then go to your nearest online or brick-and-mortar EQD dealer to get a Special Cranker for your pedalboard.

Special Cranker All Discrete Analog Distortion Enhancement Device Demo "An Overdrive You Can Trust"
Hey Friends! Welcome to your new overdrive! The Special Cranker is an all-discrete analog distortion enhancement device designed to give your signal some extra grit and boost without drastically altering your tone and retaining all of the natural nuances and character of your amp. Think of it as sticking an extra preamp tube in your amplifier for more saturation. Single notes will blossom and bloom with rich harmonics and singing sustain with responsive, tube-like sag. Power chords will sound thicker and crunchier, a little more ragged around the edges. Complex chords will remain distinct and complex, as the Special Cranker is designed to preserve your tone’s integrity without muddying up the low-end or smearing the midrange.
The Special Cranker picks up where our beloved Speaker Cranker left off. It has the same spongy, dynamic, and touch-sensitive character of the original but with more gain, double the output volume (now with a user-friendly Level control), an added Tone control to shape your signal, and a diode selector switch featuring the original asymmetrical Silicon diodes as well as a hot, new Germanium diode option.
The More control goes from nearly clean to a medium gain overdrive when at maximum. This control adjusts the bias of the transistor, so you may hear a little noise as you turn the control. Don’t freak out; it’s totally fine. The gain characteristics are dependent on which diodes are chosen. When the Germanium diodes are selected, the Special Cranker delivers a softer, more rounded response with tamed highs and lower output, while the Silicon diodes add a brighter, more modern edge and higher output. Both are exceptionally responsive to playing dynamics and have excellent clarity. The tone control gives the user full command over treble frequencies, cutting the highs when counterclockwise and adding a slight high frequency boost when turned clockwise. The Level control adjusts the output from nothing to nearly double at maximum.

Show Us Your Junk! Ep. 35 - Jamie Stillman - President and Founder of EarthQuaker Devices
Across the years, we’ve delved into the junk accumulated by many artists and producers. But for this episode of Show Us Your Junk, we’re looking inward.
In the latest S.U.Y.J episode, we’re staying right in our hometown of Akron, Ohio, and looking at some of the junk amassed by EarthQuaker Devices’ founder, lead designer, and president Jamie F. Stillman. Jamie’s gear collecting (or “gear hoarding” as he refers to it) began as a young teen and, through the years, has become extensive enough to fill his home basement and most of another building. Of course, that other home for the gear hoard doubles as the former EQD HQ and current practice space and studio. But still, it’s a lot of stuff. Jamie takes us through racks of vintage, classic, and some just old, cheap, and utterly oddball gear, from a pristine Roland Space Echo to an elaborate D.I.Y. multi-part pedalboard/spaceship/giant metal boomerang-looking rig with a “Frank Zappa” footswitch among its many settings.
If you’ve ever wondered what kind of pedal collection a pedal maker would have, here is your answer. Jamie’s got shelves filled with classic, vintage, and interesting pedals (yes, including the Miku Stomp and a fuzz pedal made by Marlboro). He’s also got drawers full of pre-EQD pedals and early prototypes of future and long-gone EQD pedals. Dig the extensive collection of beloved vintage and junky fuzz pedals with some classic tremolo and vibes. There are also synths, a plethora of nice and cheap guitars, including a few rare and custom handcrafted beauties, and a bunch of Jazzmasters. So sit a spell and check out Jamie’s junk, and perhaps if you too are a gear accumulator, you can commiserate with him as he talks of the anxiety caused by his decades of hoarding gear, some of which seldom gets used. Sure Jamie realizes that gear is made to be used and “shouldn’t just sit around and collect dust in a basement in Akron, Ohio.”
But hey, gear accumulators are gonna accumulate

EarthQuaker Sessions Ep. 49 - Ruby The Hatchet "Primitive Man" | EarthQuaker Devices
We're back with another one-song session from Ruby The Hatchet, a.k.a the heavy psyche rock pride of New Jersey. The quintet stopped by EarthQuaker HQ while on tour to lay down a couple of road-tested new songs. Here we offer "Primitive Man." It's a midtempo heavy groover featuring a pulsing melodic bass line from Lake Muir, filling out his bass tone with the Pyramids stereo flanger and the Westwood overdrive. Guitarist Johnny Scarps adds fine rocking riffage with sonic assistance from the Warden, Bit Commander, Swiss Things, and the Afterneath. Finally, organist Sean Hur frosts the groovin' tune with layers of that classic 70s space-rock organ with a dash of Avalanche Run.
Oh, It's a headbanger for sure.
Singer Jillian Taylor adds a touch of Avalanche Run and Afterneath to her powerful, bluesy vocals and harmonizes with drummer Owen Stewart.
"Primitive Man" is one of three tracks on Ruby The Hatchet's upcoming "Live at EarthQuaker" EP, which also includes another new song, "1000 Years," recorded at EQD HQ, plus a raucous studio recording of Uriah Heep's classic "Easy Livin."
The "Live at EarthQuaker" EP will release on April 22 and is a small taste of the band's next full length to be released on their new home, Magnetic Eye Records, in 2022.

EarthQuaker Sessions Ep. 47 - Arianna Powell (Olivia Rodrigo) "Drains To Ocean" | EarthQuaker Devices
Here at EQD HQ, we generally love it loud. Gives us some big power chords, bashing drums, and throbbing bass, and we are a collective of happy pedal builders. But sometimes it's good to relax and take a moment to appreciate beauty. So, for EarthQuaker Sessions #47, we offer the peaceful, beautiful playing of guitarist Arianna Powell. You may have recently seen the talented touring and session guitarist and solo artist on a little awards show called The Grammys, playing behind 2022 Billboard Woman of the Year singer Olivia Rodrigo. Arianna has also toured or performed with Dua Lipa, Halsey, Nick Jonas, and others.
For her session, Arianna performed her 2020 single, the pastoral, delicate single "Drains To Ocean." Using her signature white Gibson SG and a Fender Princeton Reverb amp with tonal assistance from EQD's Sea Machine Super Chorus, the Avalanche Run Stereo Reverb and Delay, and an Electro-Harmonix POG2. Arianna's touring pedalboard also has EQD's Spatial Delivery envelope filter, a Hoof fuzz, the Afterneath reverb, and pedals from Strymon, JHS, and Keeley.
So, sit back, close your eyes or stare at her hands while basking in the calming aural glow of Arianna's perfect, clean fingerpicking, tasteful single note runs, excellent chord choices and voicings, and her dynamic beguiling melody.
Arianna is currently out with Olivia Rodrigo on the singer's completely sold-out "Sour Tour." So, you may not get to see her live any time soon if you don't already have a ticket. But luckily for all of us, "Drains to Oceans" is available on all streaming platforms and wonderfully presented here and on the new EarthQuaker Sessions channel.

Board To Death Ep. 39 - Wata (Boris) | EarthQuaker Devices
We're back with another edition of Board To Death! This one's special because we take you on a journey through the pedalboard of none other than Wata of our favorite Japanese heavy experimental trio Boris. True pedal nerds should get a kick out of this one because Wata's board has an interesting configuration and a few EQD treats!
Wata kindly takes through her signal chain, which includes two wah pedals, one for traditional Wah tricks and another for when she wants to get really weird. Her EQD pedals include the Aqueduct vibrato (in pitch bend mode), the Avalanche Run stereo reverb and delay, the Hummingbird tremolo, and naturally, the Wata/EQD collaboration the Hizumitas Fuzz Sustainar, which replaces the original 1970s ELK BM Sustainar she has used for years.
"The reason why I have Hizumitas on my board now is, I've been using Elk's Big Muff copy for a long time. It keeps breaking when I take it out for a tour. It's broken down many times, and I've had it repaired many times. So I've wanted pedals that don't break down and something compact that can fit on my board," Wata said, noting that her bandmate, guitarist/bassist Takeshi has been using EQD pedals for some time.
"We've visited the HQ in Akron when we were on tour, and we've done a tour together (with EQD band Relaxer) in Japan too. We've been super close, and they told me that they could make a clone of my Elk BM that is compact that I always wanted, and this became the one. I added it on the board as the main dirt that I use," she said.
Wata also shows us how she stacks her DS1 with the Hizumitas and gives a taste of the main riff of the Boris tune "Pink." For free!
Wata uses several different fuzz pedals in addition to the Hizumitas in various combinations, including the Dwarfcraft Devices Shiva, the Mattoverse Air Trash, and the M.A.S.F.
