The Akron Press Club was founded in 1971 to promote a free press and serve local journalists and public relations professionals. The group has a rich heritage of bringing local and national newsmakers together to discuss compelling issues of the day at Press Club luncheons and speaking events that are open to the public. The club also funds scholarships for journalists and public relations student
s and sponsors annual fundraising and community outreach events. Members of the Akron Press Club are journalists, communicators and public relations professionals, and frequently news makers themselves. The Akron Press Club represents the area’s only association whose membership encompasses all communications fields. This powerful network includes professionals from newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, public relations, business and nonprofit communications, education, business and government. Club members benefit from opportunities to exchange ideas, hear provocative speakers, participate in professional development opportunities and attend interesting social events. The Akron Press Club is an open forum that respects the rights of free speech and press. Speakers are expected to take questions from the audience after their formal remarks. Recording of Akron Press Club events by the media or public is permitted; recording rights may be restricted only at the discretion of the Akron Press Club Board.

The Akron Press Club has not been able to hold traditional lunch programming during the current pandemic. Funds from these lunches go toward scholarships for journalism and public relations students. Between the Press Club and the John S. Knight Memorial Scholarship Fund, scholarships of $5,000 were awarded to nine students in 2020.
The COVID-19 pandemic has also disrupted the normal educational pathways for many university students, who have had to embrace learning in a virtual environment. These $5,000 scholarships make a big difference to the students who receive them.
Yes! I want to support the future of journalism by giving to the Akron Press Club Scholarship Fund. Money raised for this Scholarship Fund is given to students majoring in journalism and communications at local universities.
In his State of the Schools address on Feb. 11, Akron Public Schools Superintendent David James will discuss myriad issues facing educators and school districts today, including budget and funding in Ohio, and the COVID pandemic, which has proved to be an enormous challenge for school districts. Students at APS have been learning remotely since the middle of last March.
Akron Public Schools has roughly 21,000 students and 3,000 employees. The district includes 47 schools and community learning centers.
This year, APS started plans to expand its new College & Career Academies of Akron into all middle schools. Last year, this transformational program was built into every APS high school. Eventually, according to James, the program will be in grade levels. It already has positive, measurable results from its pilot program that was started first at North High School four years ago.
